The Hill (Sean Connery)

Just watched this on a preview DVD tonight. I can't tell you which studio as I'd have to have you killed

Anyway, wow oh wow. What a great movie. I'd seen it years ago of course but had wanted to see it again in all its glory (TCM seemed to murder it in color lately).

I hope this makes it to DVD very soon with or without extras but I'm informed there are some legal wranglings still and things are on a knife edge. Looks like the UK is in the clear for a bare-bones DVD without giving too much away.

In fact, I can tell you the disc is in PAL and is in 16:9 (not sure if that's how it should be), looks great and with a very solid mono track.

I've read that Warner should release a R1 edition in 2007, does it mean the R2 will be out sooner than the R1 release ?

As far as I can tell, MGM seem to think they still own the video rights for the UK.

A superb movie! Based on Warner's other recent releases of Lumet films, I'd wait on the R1 release -- whenever that may be. I suspect that Lumet probably recorded a commentary for it at the same time he recorded commentaries for "Network," "Dog Day Afternoon," etc. Still, it's good to know that a DVD release is on the horizon at all.

Review of the French release here. Nothing amazing then, but better than nothing.

But now we've got better than nothing in R1. DVD Times announces that The Hill will be available individually on June 5th or as part of the WWII Collection Vol. 2.

The Hill (1965)
Sean Connery headlines and Sidney Lumet directs this jolting tale of life and mutiny inside British military prison walls in North Africa during World War II. The inmates are soldiers who once defied, rebelled, talked back. The wardens are sadists who perpetrate cruelty in the name of discipline, forcing soldiers on the brink of collapse beyond endurance to struggle up a brutal incline known as The Hill, a manmade, torturous tower of sand seared by a white-hot sun. Ossie Davis and Michael Redgrave also star.

DVD Special Features:

* Vintage featurette The Sun…The Sand…The Hill
* 1965 war movies trailer gallery
* Subtitles: English (feature film only)

Very nice. A definite buy. Thanks.
