The Host

I see that a single-disc version of The Host is going to be released on the 16th of November: http://www.dvdfromkorea.com/shop/p_d...20&%20Thriller. But it's not listed on YesAsia.com. Any idea if this is actually going to happen, and if it will eventually turn up on YesAsia?

it probably wont turn up on yesasia - the 1-disc editions are rental copies and i only usually see them on dvdfromkorea and similar sites only located in korea.

It's difficult sometimes to pin down the release dates on Korean titles. With that being said, it looks like this could be a case where the Hong Kong DVD (early/mid Dec.?) is released perhaps a couple of weeks before the Korean 2-discer sometime in (mid/late?) December. It doesn't happen too often but it has happened before that the Hong Kong DVD is released before the Korean set.

Just be aware this isn't a horror film, it's a comedy. I think some people will be mislead by this one like some were The Banquet. I saw this one in a theatre and it was alright, but going in I thought it was going to be a thriller/horror when it was a family based comedy. It also happens to have one of the most pathetic looking CGI monsters in modern film history as part of the story.

A lot of people would disagree with that.

I guess there were different versions screened, too. The Cannes print had crappier monster shots than did TIFF, by all accounts the monster looked great at TIFF.

yes, it was said after earlier screenings that some extra work would be done on the film - this is often the case though, isnt it...

That's fair. I expected something a little more serious, especially seeing who created it. What I got instead was (Spoiler)

a giant guppie or catfash looking thing

Then again, it was a comedy so maybe my perspective is a bit off.

Memories of Murder had a LOT of comedic elements, and still worked well as a thriller.

According to DVDAsian.com, the Korean two-disc special edition will be released on the 19th of December: http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/23183.html. The HK release is due on the 3rd: http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/23205.html.

What do you guys think are the chances of that rental copy (from dvdfromkorea.com) not having English subs? Perhaps the details on the site are wrong and only the official release will have English subs?

I heard it was going to get some kind of theatrical run in the U.S. in late January. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Agreed. I liked Memories of Murder a lot but IMO that was a thriller first and foremost with the comedic elements popping up now and again. The director stated before The Host started he tried to make a comedy with The Host. If it wasn't for him saying that before the movie began, I may have been thrown off a little more actually. Anyhow, I never said The Host was bad, it was alright.

I saw this at the New York Film Festival, and the program noted that it has a U.S. distributor (Magnolia Pictures).

No, it's not a horror film - it has a stronger connection to all those 50's "look at the monster created by man's stupidity" movies. And yes, there is a lot of comedy, but there are some very tense sequences and at least one solid "jump" moment that elicited a gasp from the audience.

The CGI is ok, not terrific, but where else can you go to see a gigantic pissed-off guppy?

HK and Japan haven't been released yet, but I doubt the HK with surpass the Korean LE. The Japan edition looks nice, but still no subs on it. I'm holding on to my Korean LE and I'll probably buy the R1 when it come out in the fall sometime.

Thanks for the info dude!

Atleast someone who talks about the DVD release and unlike the rest of the post here that talks about the movie rather than the dvd.

By the way, was your LE the 3disc edition? or the 4disc (4th would be the OST CD)?

4 disc. I had preordered the 3 disc but after I saw the first pictures of the 4 disc set I cancelled the first order and ordered the more expensive one. Well worth it. It is a wonderful package.

From what I understand some of the extras about the CGI are spoken in english by the guys at WETA and subbed in Korean, so you might look through those, I haven't had the time.
