Battleship YAMATO movie on dvd?

One of Japan's biggest pictures in more recent years has been their movie "MEN OF YAMATO" released in 2005. It is the story of the last sortie of the Battleship Yamato in the closing months of World War II.

From what I can fathom it looks like it may be released on dvd in August. Does anyone know where I can pre-order this movie where the information will be in English? Any information that I can glean has always been from Japanese websites which of course I can't read.

This is supposed to be a major picture and yet it is very difficult to get information on it.

A R2 Japan DVD release is coming August 4th. However, based on what you've written I don't think it'll do you much good as it doesn't have English subtitles (at least as of right now). You can find a listing at either or, just search "Otokotachi no Yamato".

Is this a new movie?

It comes out on April 29, 2014.

A cult classic from the glory days of anime blazes to life on the big screen in this feature-length sci-fi epic starring Takuya Kimura (Redline, Howl’s Moving Castle)!

No, the movie was out in late 2010. I have a Region A Blu-ray of it (don't remember where I purchased, maybe yesasia)

The American release is new.

Re: Battleship YAMATO movie on dvd?

That's the live-action Japanese remake.

Starblazers was the first cartoon I got into as a child. This movie nails the look and feel of it almost perfectly. However, the version I saw of it was only in Japanese without subtitles. So, as I am very familiar with the story I knew mostly what was going on, but a subtitled version would be nice.

It looks like this version was dubbed in English? When I come home from vacation I may just have to check this out.

Re: Battleship YAMATO movie on dvd?

There's also a recent anime version of YAMATO (from 2009). I have a copy of it in Japanese with no subs. Is that ever going to come out here? I haven't seen the live-action version. My normal tendency is to avoid live-action versions of anime, whether they're Japanese or Hollywood, because they take themselves way too seriously, but the price on this Blu-ray sounds too good to pass up. I should add that I did enjoy the live-action movies, CUTIE HONEY (2004) and RUROUNI KENSHIN (2012).

Had no idea there was a live action Rurouni Kenshin movie. I didn't care much for the anime series, but the trailer for the movie does look pretty good.

Here's a link to the original discussion about the live action version of the cartoon.

I must admit that being a hardcore fan of the anime series - the live action film did things that just irked me to no avail -
