I've now listened to the commentaries and watched the extra bits on all of these. Still haven't watched the movies in a standard fashion though.

The commentaries are fun and so are some of the extras. But if you don't want to see how some of the ladies have aged you may want to avoid that stuff.

There's been some discussion of this in the DVDTalk forum, but are these R2 discs actually region free NSTC?

I can't say they are, but they play on my JVC home, Polaroid portable and MAC laptop.

Well, computer dvd roms will let you watch dvds from any region as long as you stick with that region. I think it lets you switch regions two or three times, and after that you're stuck with whatever the last region was.

That is true. I put a Japanese music vid in the computer and it told me I could change a few times and never again.

They'll probably get the next wave of discs soon.

How do you like niche?

How many discs/how much? I've been w/Netflix for about six years.

they have certainly been helpful in curtailing my DVD purchasing. They could improve on the Euro discs (notably some Danish movies I have been reading about) and British TV/comedy/music discs.

my rental plan with Niche is 3 movies at a time for a monthly fee of $24.99

on the whole I have been really happy with them. Some of the more popular titles take an extremely long time to wait for: Layer Cake for example which I just deleted off my queue since it's slated for a Region 1 release in August.

I received these today.

The only extra is the Trailer Reel. This was already on the other discs.

So, what's the transfer quality like on these? I've heard that they are still just using old video masters instead of going back to the original negatives, but they've had some work done and look better than the Region 1 discs and OOP laserdiscs (I've still heard nothing about the quality of the Japanese releases).

BTW, I'm now reading the recent Meyer biography "Big Busoms and Square Jaws" by Jimmy McDonough. It's pretty good so far.

I just watched Up! last night and what a hoot! I was surprised at the
Spoiler:
extreme (if a tad silly) gore (reminscent of H.G. Lewis)
along side the many scenes of copulation.

The transer quality looks pretty good to me. I can't compare them to anything from the past. I have dubs of the official RM releases on vid but haven't seen them in years.

The color and contrast is good and looks pretty sharp on my widescreen TV. No noise, scratches, etc. either.

The sound is also good.

Thanks for the reminder on that book. I've been watching the release date for many months and need to pick it up.

Do you have the pricey book RM put out? His site has had it "on sale" for quite a few months. They always put a deadline on the sale, but it just starts back up.

It's $129, much better than the original $349 price.

If you can't wait, you can get all the Russ Meyer DVDs here: http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?category_id=15

I got The Immoral Mr. Teas/Eve and the Handyman, Pandor's Peaks/Finders Keepers...Lovers Weepers, and Wild Gals of the Naked West/Blacksnake from these guys. The shipping was quick. The only downside is you pay full retail, and they didn't deduct the VAT even though they shipped to the US.

Thanks for the info. I think I was can wait.

That's about $30 per disc. Was shipping free to the US and how much is the VAT?

Shipping was 4.30 pounds for 3 discs. VAT in Britain is 17.5% of the total. In this case the VAT is about 2.38 pounds per disc. As I mentioned in my earlier post, they did not give me the discount on this. I am going to email them and see if they will give me the discount. I will report back my findings.

Interestingly, the book talks about the video transfers. Meyer did the transfers back in the mid 1980's and they were state of the art at the time. These transfers have been the basis of every VHS, LD and DVD released. Sadly, the people currently in charge of RM Films have no real care for Meyer's film legacy and have no desire to shell out money for new transfers taken from the original negatives. Even more sad, is that all the negatives are not being taken care of properly, and are deteriorating. This includes his films that haven't been released in years (eg. EUROPE IN THE RAW). Some of Meyer's friends are pushing to try to get RM Films to have those restored and released on DVD before it's too late, but so far no dice.

I'm thinking of picking it up, especially now that I've read his bio (which talks about the history of RM's huge book set). I would never have paid $349, but $129 isn't too bad for 3 hardcover books. The book was originally announced in the 1980's with a price tag of $80. Russ even tried to solicit some preorders. I'm sure some people were pissed that it took 15 years for the book to finally come out (at a much greater price than originally planned)

How about you buy it and read it and I'll rent it from you?

I picked up "Big Bosoms and Square Jaws" by Jimmy McDonough that you mentioned.

I read the last chapter about his demise and the other extra bits at the end and now I'm starting at the beginning.

Sad how things ended with his life and films under the direction of a controlling person that hasn't even seen them. What chance do they have when the person making the decisions has zero respect for the work.

After watching Pervert! (TLA Releasing) which is a pretty good hommage to Meyer films filled with buxom beauties, comedic horror and gore, I started looking at Meyer films available on DVD. I read about the UK Arrow film releases in this thread, did some searching, and found out there was a boxset of 18 Meyer films released in the UK by Arrow films in Nov.2006:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Russ-Meyer-C...4408920&sr=1-1

Anybody buy this? Looks like a pretty good deal for roughly $110 USD + shipping.

My guess is that these are the individual releases by Arrow re-packaged in that boxset.

That's a sweet deal. Of course I've already bought nine of them and need three more. On eBay that would be about $20 each. Oh well.

BlahDVD.com has them for 7,99 pounds sterling, which is a really good deal, I'm only missing two of that set now, which I'll be buying in early april. go to blah, then you have to go to the DVD section, and then to teh adult section, and THEN search. The DVDs don't show up in regular section of the website. Also, they are PAL R0
