My favorite scene isn't sub-titled in this release:

In the "long" version, there's an added out-take, which has the stock-broker brother on the phone, "breaking up" with his married girlfriend - it is hilarious, but it's not sub-titled in this release, as none of these out-takes are (the "long-version" movie is, but not the out-takes at the end) - though the out-takes have english subs in the older release.

So... Is this the best version of Shaolin Soccer (warts and all) or do any of the previous releases trump it in any way?

I'm a little unclear as to wether there's an actual "best of all" version or if they all have their ups and downs and it's just a case of "pick one cos none of them got it 100% right".

The original Hong Kong R0 trumps it by having a subtitled making-of, as well as subtitling the outtakes shown at the end of the extended version.

The Miramax R1 has an English dub for their edited version, not sure if that counts as a "trump" or not.

I couldn't care less about a dubbed version let alone an edited dubbed version. As for the R0, how are the subs on it, Jay G? I ask cos I've had experience with R0 HK discs where I had to employ some thought into interpreting just what the heck the subtitles are supposed to mean due to horrible grammar.

The R0 subs are pretty bad grammar and spelling wise, but are understandable. The Miramax subtitles aren't necessarily better though, for reasons I've stated above. The Korean DVD has the R0 subs on the first disc, the Miramax ones on the 2nd disc.

Really, there doesn't seem to be anything on the Korean that isn't available by having both the HK R0 and the Miramax R1. So triple or quad dipping isn't necessary. If you don't own the R1, this might make a good substitution.

I don't own the R1 - is there a reason to?

Trigger - Depends on which versions you already own. The picture on the R1 is the best (IMO), but the subtitles are eh. The R0 has picture quality and interlacing problems, where the R1 does not. I have the HK R0 release, and the Korean UE release. I'm happy.

A DVD player coded for R1 will not play an R3. However, plenty of R1 players sold are capable of being modified to all-region. check out www.videohelp.com

Has anyone else noticed on their copy that the DTS track doesn't sound like it is synched correctly? It sounds like it is about a half a second ahead of the picture. The DD Cantonese (and Mandarin) track does not have this problem.

It is especially noticable at the scene in the bar, with the glass bottles being broke over their heads.

Just a heads-up to anyone who hasn't gotten this yet, cd-wow has got it for $15.95 (if you use the $2 off coupon) and free shipping. I know some of the other places had it for like $2-13, but the shipping pushed it over $20 at the couple places I looked at last month. I'll probably be picking this up next month (went over my budget again already this month).
