DVD Talk Legend
ZZ has been quite busy lately. Wonder if her character in this one is beautiful yet deceptively tough at first, but then eventually succumbs to the will of a man she falls in love with and then their love goes unfulfilled in the end - maybe even one or both of them will die.

I saw this movie over a year ago. I can't believe it's still not out outside of China. It's an okay movie, the cinematography is very nice. Everybody looks frumpy for some reason... except for Toru Nakamura.

Not widescreen?
R1 release is 2/15/05. Deep Discount indicates it is only 1:33 full frame. The original region free Chinese disc (no Eng subs) also appeared to by only 1:33 full frame. Could this be right? Not widescreen?

I'd say that it is a very safe bet that "Purple Butterfly" will be widescreen and not full frame as listed on DDD. A few weeks ago, the online etailers had "6ixtynin9" also listed as full frame but it was indeed widescreen. Both "Purple Butterfly" and "6ixtynin9" are Palm Pictures releases, as is "Last Life in the Universe" which is also listed as full frame but again a very safe bet that it will indeed be widescreen. If you don't want to take a chance, I'm sure we should have confirmation soon enough. Plus, I think the DDD price should be steady at $13.50 for at least a couple of weeks after release as "6ixtynin9" is still selling at its initial release price of $13.50.
Also, for anyone interested in Animeigo's recently released "Samurai Assassin", that too is widescreen and not full frame as listed on the online sites.
I wish the online e-tailers would do a better job when it comes to posting more accurate tech. specs. especially for pre-order titles which don't have reviews available.

hope it's OAR, I pre-ordered this about a month ago. I was hoping it would show up before Tuesday. I've read mixed reviews on this one. Either way, I'm sure I'll enjoy watching it.

Watched this last night. Yes, it's widescreen. No, it's not a very good transfer. But it was a good movie, so it's money well spent since I can't get it anywhere else. From what I've read the transfer is better than the one HK edition, which must be horrible if it's true.
