We now have our full, detailed review of the Donnie Darko Director's Cut DVD here.
Snippet:
In summary, Donnie Darko is a wonderful film, masterfully crafted, acted and presented. Clever, articulate and innovative plot structure breathes life into the genre with an awesome star-making turn from Jake Gyllenhaal.
The soundtrack is sublime and haunting, the period convincing and the whole scenario spellbinding and evocative. It is a head-screwing movie but its surreality is wholly engaging and its unquestionable power is that its intoxicating tale never leaves you. Tragic, yet remarkably upbeat. If you haven’t already seen Donnie Darko then it must be an essential purchase.
Metrodome’s new 2 Discer is a mixed bag really. The Director’s Cut has a fine transfer, great audio presentation and a terrifically rewarding commentary track. The extras on the second disc … well, you can take them or leave them. They add very little to this great movie. Only the smart featurette on the UK fanbase is worth returning to. The rest are disappointing.

My copy came yesterday, and disc one works perfectly, but whenever I try to watch any extras on disc two the either freeze up, close the DVD window (I play dvds on my PC) or just plain will not play, has anyone else run into this problem, I'm using WinDVD to play and DVD Region + CSS free for multi region support.

That is indeed a legitimate copy. The initial print run was released with a very fetching slipcase with a lenticular insert which alternates between Donnie holding an axe and the bunny mask.
The enclosed keepcase cover has the Donnie/axe picture.

- Director's Cut theatrical trailer
It sounds like the R2 disc carries over many of the features from the original DVD edition plus those created new for the Director's Cut, while the R1 doesn't repeat any older content.

thanks. i currently don't have a region free player (i plan to get one soon, maybe for my birthday coming up) but i was considering buying the r2 version just to get the case, as its only about $10 from cdwow and i kinda hate the case on the r1 directors cut
