Jacques Rivette's Histoire de Marie et Julien-May 18

Here's some GREAT news-

Rivette's Histoire de Marie et Julien starring E. Beart is to be released on May 18 with English subs. In fact I am noticing a lovely new trend.....this is going to be Pan-Euro release (English, German, Italian, Portuguese).

Cheers,
Pro-B

Great film!! I saw it at Toronto Film Festival and was truly surprised that it had a very low profile considering the cast and the director. Truly a gem if you ask me and hopefully more people here will get to see it.

. . . well . . .

. . . although . . . (...this is for those (few?) among the readers who are conversant in French - and who are impressed by the - imnsho - complete and utter blabla often written by "serious", over-intellectualizing (French - but not only!) critics of cinemahh...)

. . . . . .

Well, i think you should see the film yourself, like i did, before making any judgements. Also i tend not to base my opinions on what other people think, although i do educate myself further by reading what other people thought of it..... there is a great review of the film(which i read AFTER seeing the film) in "film comment" by it's editor who is probably one of the best, if not the best critc in the U.S, if you wanna check it out.

well now....I just got back form a long trip to Atlanta....and I wish I could take a quick jab with my viewing experience but....I have not seen the film yet.

I will be buying this for sure. I love Rivette and combined with Beart (a personal favorite of mine) I am looking forward to it. With this said Rivette could be hard to view...he is the quintessential art director....long takes, slow progression, experience based-direction not plot....so many get frustrated with him. I love him. This does not mean that he is uncapable of delivering a disappointing film...with this said I am impatiently awaiting this release.

ps
Frenchy ....did you see Nathalie...
I hope we get subs for it.....

No, i haven't yet, i came very close when it played in NYC during the Rendez-vous but couldn't fit it into my schedule, i only went to NY for couple of days. However i was fortunate enough to see Alain Resnais' marvelous " Pas sur la bouche," i am waiting for Nathalie, but i am pretty sure you mentioned earlier that it will come w/out subs.

Just wanted to add that Anne Fontaine's "Nathalie" has been picked up by Wellspring. The New York-based film distributor plans an autumn 2004 theatrical release and a DVD/video release to follow. Certainly good news especially if french dvd doesn't include eng subs.

Very nice indeed ...

I will be picking up the French release (with or without subs) but this is great news as English subs are always welcome.....

Now...off to Marceau's Ja Reste....

La Religieuse OOP???

Cool: a wonderful Rivette film. I'll be buying it for sure.

Natalie is a very good film -- I saw in NYC last month.

Speaking of Jacques Rivette, what's the story with the R2-France La Religieuse DVD -- I hope it hasn't gone OOP...

Ted

P.S. Pro-Bassoonist: I clicked on your My DVD collection link, and it comes up as "private" -- I am all for keeping it private if you wish -- I sure don't advertise mine, but since you link to it in your posts, I thought I'd let you know.

Ted,

La Religieuse is currently not OOP but hard to locate. A new print is coming out in April. Look here:
http://www.monsieurcinema.tiscali.fr...a242ef6a660ac9

As to my collection....long story....job not well done...hopefully after I get to Chicago I will fix the problem. (I will remove the link now )

ps
By the way Ted, I posted this question in the Talk section yet no one has been able to answer me. Do you know if this R1 release of La Repetition is anamorphic....I have not been able to find any info at all (anywhere).

You mean a new printing of the DVD?

If La Repetition is available at Tower, I'll rent it and let you know... I only really visit the international forum at DVD Talk (and not very often), so if you have French film/DVD questions, please e-mail me. (I'm guessing you can do that through my profile).

Good luck Pro-B with La Repetition and it being anamorphic, although from the image you posted i see that it is a STRAND release which makes it somewhat doubtable. Poor me, i only have it on vhs.

Also keep us upto date with your purchase of "nathalie," as i read that you are diving in, even w/out eng subs.

Moon33,

Are you sure this was the French disc? I have confirmed with DVDATTITUDE that the disc will include not only Engslih subs but also German, Italian., etc. If this is indeed the case...i will have to reconsider.

Since the annoucement i've confirmed with more than one site about the dvd having english subs. It'll be a total shock to me if it doesn't.

dvdfr is not a reliable source as they used to be. Like Louis Malle's LE VOLEUR, they list this title with subs and in fact it dose not.
I'd first hand information so please hold your order.

I am still waiting for my copy to arrive and this is a very sad news!! Strange that when the dvd was announced every single site I checked indicated subs...reminds me about Fanfan La Tulipe....all over again.

Moon33....thank you for being the first one to confirm this news.
