the 727 is region free also via the remote control hack.
Thank you dude8 and Dr. Gerbil. I think I will try to get the Toshiba first as it sounds like it is a pretty good player for playing all regions. If Best Buy is unable to order it for me, I will get the Philips 727. Also, where is this $69.99 sale listed? Thanks...

I managed to find an open box 4900 at my local Best Buy for $49.99. Only thing missing is the manual. It looks like the remote and all the other stuff was never even opened. It seems to work perfectly so far. I got lucky.

the $69.99 sale price {sale end 4/3/04} is located in bestbuy b&m, it's a tag located where the sd-4900 is display. it was not advertised in bb circurlar, it's in their store. bestbuy.com DOES NOT carry the sd-4900.

target B&m carry the philip 727 for $79.99. the funny thing that target has the display model of the sd-3900, but all they have in stock is the 3950 and the sd-3960, which is not region free.

If you have a Fry's nearby -- the Toshiba SD4900 is on sale for $79.99 as of today. Not as good as the Best Buy deal, but better than Amazon's price.

or u can go to best buy and ask them if u could make a copy of the sd-4900 price tag showing it is selling for $69.99; than bring that price tag with you and pm it at fry using the $69.99 price tag from BB.

I picked up an open box 4900 at a Best Buy B&M for $60. It was the last one they had and they wouldn't go any lower than that.

So, I brought it home....hacked it......and enjoyed my Region 3 Army of Darkness DVD for the first time.

thanks dude8. finding a 4900 is proving to be more difficult than I had expected. none of the best buys near me (san francisco and emeryville) carry them anymore and none seem to be able to special order it for me. for some reason, the guy in sf checked his computer and was able to see that there are supposedly like 1500 of them in distribution for this region, but was unable to pull it up for order. so frustrating....will try to find another way to get this sucker either from best buy again or some other way...thanks again for everyone's input and information on this thread...

I applied this hack to a LG player. It brings the region menu up, I change it to 0, and then press enter. The hack only works for 48 hrs and then goes back to region 1. I also tried using pause instead of enter, and it doesn't save permanently. Any ideas?

Email me and i'll send it to you. All you'll have to do is burn the directory.

Pretty much all BBs are out of Toshiba SD-4900s now. So I had GF pick one up at Fry's for $79.99 instead.

I was finally able to buy a 4900 at Fry's. I promptly ordered Delicatessen from CD-Wow (thanks DVD Smurf from another thread) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival to officially be region-free. Thanks to everybody who contributed information and experiences to this thread....finally I am able to participate in the wonderful region-free world....and all for only 79.99

I just got my 4900 in the mail yesterday from amazon. The remote thing worked for the only non-region 1 dvd I have. Now I'm off to buy more!

I wanted to try the cd thing to make it permanently region free. I got the stuff-it trial version, but now all the links to the file are gone. I tried the ones from dvdrhelp and they are also dead. Anyone have an extra cd they can send me and I'll compensate for?

Thanks.

I zipped the directory/files and uploaded to my server. When you extract it, you should have a directory RMTM0000, a subdirectory SCARLET and a file within the SCARLET subdirectory. Just burn the entire directory to a CD using the previous instructions:

Zipped Hack File

That's strange. I just downloaded the file, opened it with winzip and it extracted perfectly.

I got it! THANK YOU!!

I'm not sure what I did wrong the first few times. I'm pretty much an idiot with this type of stuff.

And thanks to all previous who passed on the info about this wonderful player.

I got my 4900 yesterday from Buy.com for $89.

Used the instructions and d/led the file on this page

http://www.math.uga.edu/~djb/html/dvd.html

Also has the instructions for SVCD support. Now I am region free and am able to play SVCD's. It also played my DVDR- and DVDR+ discs(which was the reason I bought it in the first place. My Daewoo 5800 wouldn't recognise any DVD backups).

Grandkids are here for the weekend so I doubt if I'll have time to put the Toshiba through it's places. So far, though, it has played whatever I have tried. Just need the time to watch a disc all the way through to make sure there is no problems as the player heats up.

thanks to all who recommended this player.

Just a headsup.

Went to my local best buy (in fullerton, ca).

They had tons of 4900 on the top shelves.

59.99 =)

Also, the link above worked like a charm.

Finally... progressive action on my foreign movies on 65 inch widescreen.!!!

From my own experience, the 4900 also does a much better job playing DVD-R's than the 3900. I have a handful of -R discs that didn't play properly in my 3900, but all play perfectly in the 4900.
