For the most part, yes. The only problems I've detected with it is that the machime wouldn't play the original VERTYIGO and PSYCHO DVDs and on 2 or 3 imports subtitles flash way too fast.

In case anyone's wondering. I got my Nueston Maestro a couple days ago and this player rocks! They even included instructions in the box on how to make it Region Free. Really good PQ too. I also love being able to play Divx files burned off my PC.

The CH 500 is a good player for the money but the Maestro blows it away.

Does anyone have the JVC XV-N55SL? Is it the same as the XV-N50BK only different color? I like the XV-N50 but wants to get the silver color. I have tried the Toshiba 3900 but like the JVC better. The Toshiba 3950 is a newer model but it is not a multi-region player. I have used the CyberHome 500 for a while, it works for multi region dvds but it is slow (open/close, change chapters ...) and its claim for progressive scan is a joke - I should have asked my money back. The JVC is much better.

Looks like a nice player with many useful features, but for $200+ I would expect it blow away the cyberhome

Anyone find it for less than $250?

I just bought the Norcent DP-302v player and it's replacing my Cyberhome CH-500. I like the Norcent better since it's smaller and slimmer. I think I'm the only one that didn't really like the Cyberhome CH-500. It just didn't work that well for me.

Finally I have a player that is flawless!
JVC XV-N70BK bought from...HKFLIX

I was using "Denon 2800" that cost me $800.00 +.
Conversion was slightly wrong for my Widescreen TV,
and totally wrong for a 4:3 TV.
3 years watching PAL movies in wrong ratios. NO more!

JVC is my answer to my prayers.
So far I've played apprx. 30 movies, most PAL & perfect!
Picture quality is unreal flawless, even on Toy Story 2.
My Denon has audio drop outs with Toy Story & other titles.
Ya, no longer the case with JVC.

Goes to show $ is not everything all the time.
U would think a $800.00 player would be better than $290.00, NOPE!

Has anyone checked out the Malata DVP-558 yet? I like the design and the fact that you can play DVD-A.

$69 AND free shipping from Amazon.com for the Philips 727 is the cheapest it gets for a remote modded Region Free player that does correct and excellent PAL to NTSC conversion.

Another for the Philips 727 - I've had it for 3 months and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I like the my Malata DAV (?) 6500 for the xy scaling and incremental zooming, but find the pic a bit soft and colors muted --- the Toshiba 3900 just went up a notch for me with this little program that makes it region 0 forever! Check out the thread:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=342250

the Tosh has the chroma bug, and no zoom out ability, but otherwise looks pretty darned good. In a distant 3rd place for me now is the Cyberhome CH 500 -- choppy play, chroma bug, buggy transport.

The 727 is now $75. Worth it over the Cyberhome?

Bummer, I should have bought another while it was cheaper.

Absolutely worth it over the Cyberhome.

Okay. I don't have a Widescreen TV yet so between these three players, which is the best for non-anamorphic viewing (picture image clean and not blocky)?

Philips 727
Toshiba 3900
JVC XV-N70BK

I know the JVC is the most expensive of the three but if it looks better than the other two, I'd rather pay the difference. But if the image is the same (or better) for one of the cheaper players, I'd pick one of those up instead (and spend the extra money on DVDs!).

I'm leaning towards the Toshiba because the Angle problem on the Philips would drive me buggy. The only thing working against the Toshiba now is the problems it has with certain discs. Does the upgrade mentioned in this thread:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=342250

Take care of the viewing problems with DVDs like Bend it with Beckham and others? There's some PAL DVDs I really want to pick up and it would crush me if I bought the Toshiba to view them and they don't work.

Thanks to anyone who responds.

Andrew

If you have an Interlaced TV the Tosh and Philips will give you a better picture. I'm not sure which is better at letterboxing anamorphic discs.

I've had a JVC XV-S500 for about a year and a half, and I really like it. I use it as my main player so it gets alot of use, but it still works fine and it still plays every import DVD I own.

I use a Denon 1600 for my R1 widescreen discs and a Malata 520 for everything else (including R1 4x3 stuff since the Malata will put black bars on the side so I don't have to use the gray ones generated by my tv). The Malata has worked perfectly for 2 years. The picture, while not as good as my Denon, is great.

Where at? I was thinking of getting one of these as a spare.

Amazon has the Philips 727 at that price ($75) with free shipping. I'm totally satisfied with mine....

I have an Apex AD-1500 with flashed firmware. It played more discs than my 3 other DVD players (Toshiba SD2109, PC DVD-ROM drive, and Onkyo DRC500). But it does have problem sending out Dolby Digital signal through the digital coax line. I didn't have this problem with DTS through digital coax line. Anyone who have an Apex know how to fix this problem?

Cyberhome 500

Overall an acceptable machine, but...

I'm really tired of the shortcomings.

Very slow to start, very slow to swtich between warnings and menu. Slow between menu choices. But the worst offense is that there are several Disney DVDs where it defaults to displaying the subtitles. I have a wife who's not keen on technology and I'd love to have a dvd player where you don't have to turn the subtitles off on every third Disney disk.

Off the top of my head:

Nemo
Lion King
Alice in Wonderland

all give me difficulty. Can anyone verify that the Phillips 727 has better performance? Also, does it have macrovision disabling ability?

I was using the Cyberhome for about 5 months before it started to act up on me. Discs would pause at the layer change, some discs didn't display the menu right (Scarfact Bonus disc would just show a white screen). So I switched to the Philips 726 and haven't looked back. I also have a Panasonic RP-82 that I had modded that I haven't hooked up to my HT yet.
