Killer Clan - martial art, but different from the Chang Cheh style
The Kingdom and the Beauty - huang-mei-diao musical
Come Drink with Me - influenced Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Heroic Ones - classic Chang Cheh
Hong Kong Nocturne - SB try to imitate the Hollywood musicals
The Warlore - comedy, Michael Hui feture debut
The House of 72 Tenants - 70's Cantonese comedy that resurrect the Cantonese cinema
The Blood Brothers - classics Chang Cheh
Love without End - classic melodrama
I have more recommendations but I don't know their english title until they are released.

Celestial Pictures is shopping films for distribution at AFM next week. So I wonder how good is that Miramax has picked up the Shaw Bros. releases? Unfortunately it doesn't look like they'll be screening the Shaw Bros stuff. In the HR today, they list the following:

Cala My Dog [screened]

Dir: Chu Yuan
Actors: Lily Ho, Yueh Hua, Pei Ti.
The Love Eterne [not being screened]

Actors: Betty Loh, Ivy Ling Po
The New Option [screened]

Has anyone seen any of the latest batch of Shaw Brothers DVDs? -- Cave of the Silken Web, We Love Millionaires, etc? Anybody care to share some thoughts on these?
How about some of the other SB melodramas and comedies, like Till the End of Time, Love Without End or The Millionaire Chase?

I saw COME DRINK WITH ME and KILLER CLANS. I'm really impressed by the high production values, lavish costumes and set design and attention to detail but I found the action to be extremely dated. I prefer the fast-paced choreography of '80s and '90s HK action movies.
also saw KINGDOM AND THE BEAUTY and was blown away by it. This was the first huang mei diao (yellow plum opera) movie I've ever seen. I'm hooked and I hate musicals in general! Now I'm looking forward to future yellow plum opera titles like Three Smiles and Last Woman of Shang

Just received this e-mail from Celestial:
Not too shabby, huh?
Dear Jussi:
Thank you for your support in Celestial's Shaw Brothers movies. We are sorry for the late response as we have discovered a backlog of unattended enquiries due to technical (or could be human) glitches after the departure of one of our staff.
The good news is: we are doing anamorphic enhancement tests right now and is planning to have our DVDs with anamorphic enhancement from May onwards.
Please log on to our SOON-TO-BE-LAUNCHED corporate website: www.celestialpictures.com for updated news.
Thanks again for your understanding, patience and continued support.
Best regards.

I attended the opening night of the Herioc Grace UCLA Shaw Bros. Festival last week. Screened was the Executioners from Shaolin. Quentin Tarantino, John Woo and Curtis Hanson were in attendance.
Celestial had been here all week attending AFM. At the screening, they said that by the end of the year, there would be dvds available in the states, but did not name a distributor.
As for the movie, the print was ok. I mean I'm not expecting anything spectacular considering the age of the film and the conditions it was stored. I did notice more scenes tho missing from the tv/video cut.
I'll be at the festival tonight for Vengeance! & One-Armed Swordsman.

Here is a 2003 release schedule:
http://tombofdvd.com/linnscave2.htm
Celestial is starting to fall behind on some of the dates, so chances are these dates are off.

So each of the days of the Heroic Grace festival that I've been attending.. I've picked up a program. It's pretty neat and carries a lot of information in it about Jiang Hu films, their history, etc as well as full page summaries of the films they are showing. It's about 52 pages long. I have 6 copies to give away. If anyone would like one (that resides outside of the Los Angeles area), just post your email.
The cover looks like this...

BTW, the restored/re-mastered prints of 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Return to the 36th Chamber of Shaolin were awesome. Can't wait for these on DVD!

Beware! I bought "The Magic Blade" and "Anonymous Heroes" because they were supposedly region 0; in fact, they are region 3, just like all of the rest of the discs.
I do have one DVD player which will play any region, so I'll proably keep them. I took a quick look at them and the quality looked quite nice, but beware the claims of region 0!
