Best versions for BLACK MASK / FIST OF LEGEND ????
I wonder what the best versions of these two Jet Li flicks are.
BLACK MASK
---------------------------------------------------
- VHS PAL (UK) ++ English Dubbed ++
- DVD (FRANCE) ++ English Dubbed ++ 1.85:1 (16x9)
- DVD (US) ++ English Dubbed ++ 1.85:1
- DVD (TAIWAN) ++ Subtitled ++ Widescreen
FIST OF LEGEND
---------------------------------------------------
- VHS PAL (UK) +++ Subtitled +++ Widescreen
- DVD (TAIWAN) +++ Subtitled +++ Widescreen
- DVD (US) +++ English Dubbed +++ 1.85:1
I am not sure about the cuts these versions have suffered, but I heard that the TAIWAN releases are the most complete and carry the original audio track. Any comments on that and on what the discs are like ?
And does anybody know where I can order these TAIWAN versions ?
Thanks.

The taiwan DVD of Fist of Legend does not have the original language track. It is mandarin dubbed. It does have the original music, though, albeit arranged slightly differently than in the original. At least the subs in it are more true than the horribly changed dialogue of the English dubbed version that changes parts of the story significantly for the worse. The taiwanese DVD also has the opium scene that is missing from other versions.
Personally, for Fist of Legend, I'd grab the Tai Seng VHS. It's what I have. Has the original cantonese/japanese language, original music, and the original subs. It is only missing a short 3-minutes scene of Ting-An smoking opium and his girlfriend confronting him about it and a quick few seconds scene with him and his girlfriend later. While it is unfortunate to lose any scenes, these scenes are short and are not terribly important to the story.

The best version of FOL is the HK laserdisc version. I know that many HK movie rental stores in the SF Bay area are trying to get rid of their LDs so I suspect this is happening in other cities as well. You might very well find a rental for super-cheap (say $5-10).

Is there a disc with the original language of Black Mask? I have the Artisan release (US) and I felt that it would have been much better subtitled, with the original language. Also, were there any cuts in the US release of this, and is the music original, or did they change that, as well?
