[Reviews] Love Me, Love My Money & The Record

Love Me Love My Money

Tony Leung and Shu Qi in a romantic comedy of sorts about a rich business tycoon cheapskate who wants a girl to like him for him and not just his money... he and his girlfriend break up and out of anger she decides to teach him a lesson so she reports his credit cards stolen and has all his belongings donated to charity. During his period of being pennyless he meets Shu Qi who takes him for a guy without much money and they fall for each other blah blah blah. The plot is pretty stupid actually. I think we're just getting sick of seeing Tony Leung play an a**hole all the time and then getting what he wants in the end. Sorry if you think I gave something away, but there's really nothing to spoil here as it is all totally obvious what's going to happen next.

The acting is okay and there are a few moments that deserve a slight chuckle, but overall it's nothing more than "something to watch"... The DVD by China Star is pretty terrible. I mean, the menu is nice and the picture quality is good and the sound is also good... it's just that the subtitles are worthless. They omit every other sentence save for the last word or two. So what you hear is "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" and all you see is "...the taxi." That's it. It angered me so much. Perhaps some witty dialogue took place, but I'll never know. There's just enough there to basically follow what's happening, but if you want to know exactly what's being said you had better start learning Cantonese. Shu Qi is radiant as usual, but this is a film you can safely pass on if for no other reason than the fact that the subtitles are so bad. China Star dropped the ball on subtitles yet again. I have a few other CS titles that have something wrong with the subtitles. Apart from not subtitling everything, the subtitles were rather small (kinda like in La Brassiere, but at least in that they pretty much translated most everything that was said). It's like they were too damn lazy to translate everything... "oh, nobody who speaks english will even notice if I cut out 40% of the dialogue"

Overall, I'd give the film a 5/10 and a - even if the subtitles were good I think I'd feel the same way. This film just didn't have much going for it... well, maybe it did... I will never know cuz I probably won't ever watch it again even if they release a proper DVD of it. Shu Qi fans might want to just skip it. Tony Leung fans would probably like it cuz he plays the same guy he always plays...

The Record

This is the Korean version of I Know What You Did Last Summer only not as good. It had some good points, but everything they did right just got forgotten about. By the end you're wishing you could get your hour and a half back. There's a few surprises, but they make you groan and roll your eyes at how stupid the premise is rather than be surprised. They had many many opportunities to make it cool, but never took advantage of them. It started out quite stylish, but that wasn't even sustained past the first 10 minutes... it's a shame because that might've saved this film from its bland and recycled plot.

The WideSight DVD has a pretty good picture, but it's in full screen (P&S) with burned-in subs. The subs are easy enough to read though and things seem well translated. Overall I give this a and a 5/10 - it falls under the category of "you've seen this already".
