Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

Looks like Disney Movie Rewards is about to get overhauled, including new rewards, etc.

That sounds great. Why do I get the feeling that all of the changes will suck?

Because Coke announced something similar and afterward their program really sucked.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

DMR was pretty dry already, so I’m cautiously optimistic this new program will give us something better.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

Hopefully there is still enough product to make all the points many of us have still valuable.

I do remember years back they were going to shut down DMR or expire points or something. Then all of a sudden it stayed active.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

I seem to remember when it first started it claimed the points would expire by a certain date, then the date moved a couple times, then they removed the expiration notice.

It's probably going to be exactly like Marvel Insider. Over there they have you do tasks like read articles and watch videos to earn points, and you can redeem them for things. https://www.marvel.com/insider

I think Lego's VIP program moved to a similar system recently too.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

Yeah, I got an email from Marvel too:

We wanted to let you know of some upcoming changes to the way you access your Marvel account.

Starting on 8/27/2019, you will no longer be able to log in to Marvel sites and apps using your username xxxxxxxxx - this includes accessing:
Marvel.com
Marvel Insider
Marvel Unlimited - App and Web
Marvel Comics App
Marvel Digital Comic Shop
Marvel Print Subscriptions
To access your Marvel account beginning on 8/27/2019 you will need to login by using the email address associated with your account, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Additionally, your Marvel account will now be part of The Walt Disney Company login system. This will allow you to use your Marvel account across multiple Disney sites and apps including: Star Wars, ESPN, ABC and more.

Since your Marvel account email is already associated with an existing Disney account, starting on 8/27/2019 you will login to your Marvel account using the same email/password as your Disney account credentials.

The best part about the new Disney Insider is they say points will be given for digital movie purchases again. If they didn't make this change, getting points was going to be hard to continue.

I'm glad I burned through most of my points during that last fire sale they had. I can't remember the last time that a rewards program actually changed for the better. Best Buy, Starbucks, Gamestop, etc sucked after the changes.

I have enough points for the studio tour, just need to find time to go. Hope they don't get rid of that. Remember when The Wherehouse had a points program for renting movies, I racked up a ton and then never got around to redeeming them before they canned it!

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

I just bought so many discs off there it's not even funny, and I still have points to go. I would've enjoyed the studio tour, but it's at Disneyland only (for obvious reasons), and we're heading to World this winter...

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

I just used up most of my points. I've been a little more active in using them anyway after the last time Disney was potentially changing things in their DMR program - not to mention their competitor Sony stopping with DVDs and Blu-rays with their points program. (I don't even know if Sony even has a program anymore.) I agree that generally when they change these points programs it's rarely for the better on the customer side. I suspect they'll be offering more digital movies as rewards which doesn't interest me.

The movie rewards program was nice. It may still be nice after the change. i guess we'll all see soon enough.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

Yeah, I guess there’s a small chance the point system won’t get worse, or maybe even slightly better, but I’m going to go ahead and burn as many of my points as I can. That should get me most of the disc rewards I want.

But I wonder if I should redeem some/all of my thousands of unredeemed points before the change?

Based on this email, I’d definitely hold onto them.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

I share the concern Disney may do away with physical media in their points system similar to what Sony did with their system.

As far as I am concerned, they can cast DMR into the Lake of Fire.

Re: Disney Movie Insiders (RIP DMR)

Nah, as bad as it’s been, the new service will either be the same bad stuff, or actually be better. Bar is low for improvement. It wouldn’t take much to make it a lot better.

Besides, I still have 21k points to get rid of.

Yes. Apparently it's not ready for primetime yet.

The two are handled by completely different people, obviously. In fact, I believe the entire DMR operation is farmed out to a third party company.

Some gift fulfillment company. Disney outsources the entire operation to a third party company that competitively bidded on servicing DMR.
