Once I was able to see the steelbook in person I too thought it was superior. So now I just need to unload the standard 3D version somehow.

I really wanted this movie, was anxious for its release, but with price vs. income as they are I opted for the BD+DVD+DHD release @$22.99. Wish they would've had it for $19.99 like they have for most new releases but with Disney behind the wheel I guess that's not going to happen. Greed is what fucked our economy up in the first place, I guess we still haven't learned our lesson. The steelbook looked good but I had to draw a line somewhere.
BTW, we watched it night before last, we both liked it...

True, that's what I can always hope for and I'll cross my fingers that it shows up. I mean at the point even if its damaged up the wazzu, I still have a free digital code. I'll keep watching it for another week, but I'll give up eventually.

I remember when Disney jumped into regular DVD. They put out a crappy transfer and had a $39.99 MSRP compared to the industry average of $29.99. People not buying their product brought the price down.
Is this a case of studio pricing or did the retailers not discount so much because they knew it would sell anyway?

Back when I was getting four or five a week, or when money was really tight, the price was very important. Now that I average maybe one a month, I just buy on release week and don't worry about the $3 or $4.

I know that Amazon has had a feud going with Disney over their pricing for a little while now. They specifically held out offering Doctor Strange for pre-order in hopes of squeezing a better price from Disney, but in the end they sold it for the same $22.99 everyone else was selling it for. Disney is just plain greedy.

Are you reading the 3D review? Where does it say it's darker? And for comparison's sake - EVERY 3D picture will not be as "punchy" as 2D, due to the 3D filter.

or get a LG OLED 4K TV - those suckers punch out a ton of light for 3D viewing ('Doctor Strange' 3D looked fantastic by the way).

The only real drawback is that colors are a little less punchy and nuanced. An already dark film is a bit more dim in 3D; even brighter locations, like the hospital when a bloodied Strange is rolled in after his accident, doesn't enjoy the same intensity as the standard Blu-ray has to offer. Still, color holds solid enough; oranges still dazzle and the abundantly colorful dimensions are still nicely saturated; they're all just a step or two down from the general release and represent the only real drawback on offer. Black levels are appropriately deep and detailed and skin tones appear neutral, if not, again, a hair less full.

director Scott Derrickson did say he did a UHD color pass of the movie - I am very curious how that will look compared to the 2D bluray. (Come on Disney... [Michael Jackson voice: "make that change"])
