Picked up Salems Lot at FYE today, $10. They had It and Cats Eye there too, I almost bought It, also, but it's still a full screen movie. I would of bought it if it was converted to widescreen.

You misread him. He was talking about 'It' being full-frame, as the miniseries was originally aired.

Seems like Amazon has two versions of IT: 1-disc $9.99 and 2-disc $12.99, both out Oct 4. Not sure if there were two different blu-ray releases.

Re: It/Salem's Lot/Cat's Eye--9/20/16

I got It last week from Best Buy. I placed an order for it when it said backordered but it still shipped pretty quickly.

I did the same for Cat's Eye this week but it's still sitting at Preparing For Shipment.

Got copies of Salem's Lot and It from bestbuy.com today.

They are night and day picture-wise from the old dvds. Very happy watching these again.

WB and Amazon have been in wholesale disputes for some time over inventory. So we get these silly little games between the two from time to time.

Re: It/Salem's Lot/Cat's Eye--9/20/16

Old ass bump.....

So after seeing footage of the new IT movie at SDCC this year, my kids wanted to check out the original.
I noticed that the DVD was WS while BD went back to 1.33 : 1
There's a lot of info missing this way. Why didnt they do WS or at least have both versions?

1:33:1 would be the original aspect ratio as it was a made for TV film. I didn't know there was a widescreen version. Agreed it would have been nice to have both but guessing it would add expense in doing the transfer.

Re: It/Salem's Lot/Cat's Eye--9/20/16

Well it was filmed at 1:85 and obviously, for the time, was formatted to fit 4x3 TVs
Just odd they would use the full 1:85 for DVD but go back to 1:33:1 for BD

Re: It/Salem's Lot/Cat's Eye--9/20/16

Any TV programming of that era would have been composed for 4:3, regardless of what's on the camera negative.

Before digital, TV shows and movies were shot on film (either 16mm or 35mm depending on budget) using only 3 perfs of height per frame (as opposed to the 4-perf standard for theatrical features) as a money-saving measure. 3 perfs use less film. This results in an image with less height, which is very close to 16:9. However, that doesn't mean the shows were actually composed for 16:9. The intended 4:3 image was extracted from the center of the film frame.

Exposing the entire 16:9 camera negative now is essentially an open-matte presentation, akin to taking the top and bottom mattes off a 1.85:1 movie. It exposes excess picture never intended to be seen.

I'm not sure about It... it was a tv miniseries, so it might have been filmed open matte with some kind of possible theatrical release in mind. Is the widescreen presentation cropped at the top and bottom, or is there more info on the sides?
