Doesn't Sony have the largest 4K catalog? I remember reading about that somewhere a while back. It's not so much a format war this time as it is trying to figure out the best way to deliver 4K content since all TV's will be that way in a few years. So what's the best way to deliver 4K content and maximize profitibility. Sony thinks this new contraption/service may be the way. But abandoning physical media may not be the best option for them or anyone.

Although they haven't announced a player yet, that doesn't mean that one isn't on the way. They have announced software support, and honestly, that's more important than another player anyway.

Left unsaid is that Lionsgate was basically bribed to release movies for Blu-ray early in its lifecycle. Many of their early BDs now don't work due to faulty manufacturing.

(On a tangent).

The only easy way I found around this problem back when I first started buying a lot of blurays in 2011, was to buy the Canadian pressings of various early Lionsgate bluray titles released by Maple Pictures. (Maple Pictures was owned by Lionsgate over the span of bluray's early era). Maple seemed to have used a better bluray manufacturing plant at the time.

Well, that's a good sign- I don't think any of the first Blu-Rays were priced that low. Prices generally come down further after a while too.

What do you have against Sicario? The other titles are disposable, sure, but Sicario is a smart pick for a launch title. Critically acclaimed, strong word-of-mouth, solid box office, likely to be part of the Oscar conversation shortly.

Nothing against the film. It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing that's going to inspire people to invest in a new format.

I hate to sound hack but usually to roll out a new format one of the blockbuster, mindless, loud popcorn movies are the ticket. I remember when DVD rolled out, Twister was the demo disc.

Which maybe true, but this doesn't mean shit for exploiting Ultra HD clarity, colors, effects, etc.

Avatar should be a launch title. Haven't read if it is, so forgive me if it was already chosen. Colors pop. Definition is amazing on Blu-ray.

Sicario looks good for a war movie with the typical plots, but it's not in business to convince UHD folks. It's got a tempered/throttled color palette, for example to emphasize effect. We've seen this color palette in a lot of movies. Yawn. Get me a vomit bucket, thanks.

For UHD to convince, first, get the visual a priority (the audio should be 7.1 standard by now, and if not, whatever). Toss the fucking drama crap out the window as the main thrust to sell this format.

Visuals come first. Visuals create the emotion. Not the other way around.

If it's filtered, toss that sucker out the window as well. Not saying they can't be better in UHD, but certainly NOT A REFERENCE POINT. And that's why you do a launch title to begin with. Set your standards high to show what the format can do.

Launch titles for any new format are almost always terrible. This is nothing new. The studios do not want to release "winners" that may sell better when a format has a much larger installed base of potential customers down the line.

I've had Strange Days on BD for years now. UHD would make no difference.
