I've dropped a shit load of money on Ghibli blu's (from Hong Kong, Japan, and the UK for 'Nausicaa' [commentary track subbed into English]) - while I want the extras on Mononoke, Spirited Away - eh... I'm not biting just yet.

I was thinking about ordering this but yeah $250 is too rich for my blood. I'll just pick up the ones I really want individually unless the price drops.

Couldn't you join the Disney movie club and get most (if not all of these) and then cancel? I would think that would still be cheaper than the $250 price tag.

Now that they are all finally released on BD, yeah, that would be a good way to go.

I'll hold off right now as well. $250 for what would amount to a handful of blind buys for me is just too rich. I haven't paid much attention to Amazon's exclusives but do they have a tendency to fluctuate at all on price or do they start high and stay high?

The exclusives fluctuate just like anything on Amazon. I know the Marvel Phase II box set which is also an exclusive is showing at $225 currently but was down to $179 or so for a while.

I did just that at the beginning of Summer. Knocks them down to around $10 a pop. I think it was 9 movies for around $90 when all is said and done. Then that leaves a few others to pick up on sale if you are so inclined.

The Amazon exclusive for the Rodgers and Hammerstein collection fluctuated all over the place. I think the preorder was 60% off for a few days, and it was a deal of the day at 75% off a few months later. I don't expect the same kind of deals for the Miyazaki set though,

It's an exclusive, so I don't know how many will be produced.

I remember their Cowboy Bebop exclusive fluctuated in price, but sold out rather quickly, followed by the re-sellers having a field day on it.

The Disney Movie Club is also your best bet at getting the slipcovers for the older releases at this point. All the places I see that have them in stock, including Costco, only have the non-slipcover copies at this point.

The bubble mailer joke is almost as tired as the Christopher Nolan rants.

I bet if I ordered any of Nolan's shitty films from amazon they would send them in a bubble mailer and they would have cracked cases, damaged artwork and the disc would be floating around inside.

Amazon always sends my big sets in a cardboard box big enough to hold whatever set I've ordered and usually pad it with packets of those inflatable plastic bags.

Can you enlighten me? I'm interested in this set (have seen many of the movies) but I'm not familiar with the previous blu ray releases of these films.

I churn accounts there pretty frequently for resale purposes, and the slipcovers are nearly exhausted. Only Spirited Away and Cat Returns reliably arrive in slips, although the odd one off is still possible.

If I'm not mistaken, it's when the subtitles are based off the English translation instead of the original Japanese.

Made worse by the fact that the Disney DVDs had the correct subtitles. No excuse not to port them over to their BD counterparts.

Anyone know anything about this? Disney aren't the right-holders overseas, but it looks like this ports some of their extras.

Re: The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki (Nov. 17 Amazon exclusive)

I didn't watch the entire video, but do they say that it ports over the Disney extras?

The Collected Works that came out here actually had new pressings of the disks which stripped out the US extras, but did things like fix the dubtitles on some of them. So even the US release didn't have the Disney extras (voice actor commentary, etc.) I believe the same is true of the Japanese release, presumably to keep this set focused on Miyazaki, with the only extras coming on the exclusive extra disk (the interview with Miyazaki, etc.)

I didn't watch the video, but from what I could see from the extras listed on the website, it looked like it. Didn't know about the omitted extras. Should I keep my DVDs around?

I kept all of my Disney Ghibli DVDs specially because of the subtitles and extras.
