Reservoir Dogs Blu-ray Just Bit the Dust

Luckily I have only noticed this happen on two of the Blu-Rays so far but I went to play Reservoir Dogs and my Blu-ray player didn't respond.

I tried the disc in my other player and the disc started but picture was incredibly pixelated and then stopped. From there the disc wouldn't eject and I couldn't even turn the power off. After unplugging the machine and turning the power back on, the disc finally ejected.

About two years ago this disc played fine and both machines have the latest firmware, which shouldn't make difference since this disc was pressed in 2007.

The underside of the disc looks perfect, nothing that would lend me to think there was problem. The only other disc I had that had a similar problem was Basic Instinct, which was also a Lion's Gate disc as well.

Most of the Lion's Gate titles eventually became distributed by MAPLE, at least here in Canada and I haven't had a problem with any MAPLE discs. Hopefully this is just a one-off problem for Lion's Gate discs and not the whole format.

Well it had visual issues anyway. Not worth the buy for it. I'm still waiting for a good BD of this film.

I've heard of some issues with early LG titles; I know that some people were having American Psycho quit playing.

I'll have to check my RD disc later. It was one of my first blu-rays I bought back in '09.

Early Lionsgate BDs made before 2008 have spontaneously failed before, this is not uncommon. I don't believe they ever owned to the issue, most of the BDs started failing years after they were sold. It's no secret the bigger Blu-ray studios basically paid Lionsgate off to join Blu-ray in those early years. Many of their releases were subsidized by the Blu-ray consortium during that time.

My Reservoir Dogs blu-ray is still holding up. Bought it in the second half of 2009 for something like ten dollars; it has a shiny, reflective silver cover so it's probably an older edition.
