Yeah, I saw this movie twice in the theaters. Once in 2D and once in 3D and this was one of the few movies that I preferred the 3D version.

I seriously wonder if my theater fucked it up somehow.
My Cinemark is pretty solid in properly showing the films as it is supposed to be.

Not yet but I do plan to get it. I just got a 3D projector last week.
I saw this in IMAX 3D so there was likely a good bit of difference between that 3D and Real 3D. IMAX 3D for me is always more vibrant and stands out much more than Real 3D (which is what is shown in my other theaters if you don't want to pay extra for the "LieMAX").
I just bought an Epson 3500 which is crazy bright and really makes 3D pop at home. So I definitely plan to pick it up as soon as it reaches a decent price-point.

The 3D on the blu-ray is pretty fantastic, surprisingly. At least on my setup (using a low-end Optoma HD131Xe / HD141X projector), there is fantastic depth to it.

No. Just like many of us saw The Road Warrior before Mad Max, this movie is perfectly enjoyable without being familiar with the other films. The villain in Fury Road actually played a villain in the first film but there is no continuity in the characters.

Certainly not. You basically get all of the necessary expository information in the first 60 seconds: nuclear war, post-apocalyptic world, gasoline is valuable, surviving is the only priority, Max was an ex-cop with insane driving skills. That's basically it. All information thereafter is new to this film and is essentially delivered on the run. In fact, there's a new bit of Max's backstory introduced in flashback which wasn't in the original films. There are a few neat Easter eggs if you're a fan of the earlier films, but none you'd need to understand this one. Just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Everyone's raving about the latest entry and it's on Redbox.

So Germany is getting the Black & White version - it says exclusive/limited edition, so who knows when it will hit the states. I preordered it via Amazon Germany and it came to about $49 shipped - almost a 1/1 ratio and it's actually all FOUR films including the B&W version in addition to 4 hours of new content for Fury Road.

According to a listing posted to Amazon Germany, George Miller's Mad Max series is getting a brand-new, 6-disc "High Octane" collection (if you're in Germany, you can apparently purchase/pre-order it right now). And get this: it sounds like one of those discs will include George Miller's black-and-white cut of Fury Road.
Here's what they're saying about the matter over at Empire Online:
The beady-eyed Blu-ray collectors amongst you may have noticed that a pre-order link for the 6-disc ‘High Octane Collection’ is now available on Amazon Germany, including all four Mad Max films and a ‘Black and Chrome’ version.
According to Amazon, the ‘surreal black-and-white version of Fury Road’ (which apparently has the same 120 minute running time as its theatrical counterpart) will appear alongside some previously unreleased documentaries and four hours of ‘new bonus material’.

You'll recall that George Miller confirmed the existence of a black-and-white cut of Fury Road earlier this year. When can American get its hands on one? No word as of yet, but my guess is we'll know sooner rather than later. Stay tuned.

I've been holding off getting the Max movies on BD because I figured a better set was on the horizon. I really hope some of the new features cover The Road Warrior and Thunderdome in depth, which is what has been missing.

I just can't get excited for black and white versions of movies that were originally presented in color. if I want to watch something in b&w, I can just put my television in b&w mode.
The exception I would make is for Inglorious Badterds, where the third part was originally to be in b&w like a French New Wave film. (Don't know why QT didn't do that in the final film.)

I just can't get excited for black and white versions of movies that were originally presented in color. if I want to watch something in b&w, I can just put my television in b&w mode.

I'd normally agree but like the case was in The Mist and that first pilot episode of Walking Dead that Darabont did (in B&W) - Miller will most likely have supervised the grading of the B&W version.
Josh Z, can you elaborate on the process of grading a film for B&W - is it really just as easy as turning the color off on your television?

No, turning off or down the color in your television will not give you the same black-and-white image as a movie that's been deliberately graded for b&w. The gray scale and tonalities will be off.

It's very much like processing a picture on Photoshop or Lightroom. You simply click a button to convert from color to B&W, but as Josh said, the grey scale and tones will be off. A lot of that usually has to be adjusted, based on light/darks in the color picture.
