Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (04/07/15)
Saw this over on blu-ray.com. Screw having a remastered picture, I'm in for the Martin Scorsese letter.
Warner will have another release of Goodfellas, this time for the film's 25th Anniversary on May 5th, 2015. Right now there is no word on any remastering done, but there are some new interviews included with Scorsese, and cast, as well as a 36-Page Photobook.

I'm not sure how they can reissue this without a remaster. They've been recycling that same disc since the birth of the format. It needs it very badly.

How many times has it be reissued w/ the same transfer? 3 times? The regular BD, the DB, and... the Steelbook. I think.

Four -- the other time was when it was part of the WB Gangsters BD collection. At the time, it was supposed to include a remaster that Scorcese had been working on but it turned out to just be the same old disc.

This is WARNER BROS. They passed up putting out a 30th Anniversary Edition of Amadeus. Is it *that* freaking hard to release the movie with the theatrical cut of the film on Blu ray? Or even a single-sided DVD! (The only way to watch the theatrical cut of Amadeus in a digital format *legally* is buying the flipper disc from 18 years ago!)
As far as Goodfellas on Blu ray. I've watched it. What exactly is wrong with it? I don't have a form of reference to go on. It looks better than the DVD, but that's it. I'm almost afraid to ask.

I can't say much beyond the first 4 minutes but.. it's blacks have issues, it's murky as hell w/ the colors, just looks bad today. Some sites don't make issue w/ it but even in 2007 it wasn't up to par.

I actually don't recall the transfer being panned across the board, mostly comments along the line of "It could have looked better." It's not pristine, but it's not bad either. Considering I got my copy for $5, I'm not caring too much. That being said, it could use a good remaster, but as we're talking about Warner Bros., I'm not holding my breath we'll get it. Knowing their line of thinking, they may think giving us a few new extras and a letter from Martin Scorsese, that alone may be enough.
Not that I hold it on the same level, but Warner's put out the Ocean's trilogy 3 times, and never gave us a remastered picture. Giving us different packaging is about as much as they want to do.

I think the digibook might be cool to have no matter what. But wait until the new transfar comes out, scoop up the old release on the cheap, and put the new disc in the old book.
Assuming we get a new transfer I think this will be my plan.

They did remaster The Fugitive. I think we'll finally get a remastered version of Goodfellas this time. Although I assumed it would be part of their Diamond Luxe line, but that appears to not be the case.

The Fugitive "remaster" is barely a remaster. Maybe it looks as good as it can already, but the Fugitive remaster was more like a better encode of the first release along with lossless audio.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)
the big up w that is that they fixed a filming error (a crew reflection), as the original blu ray used the original dvd release as a guide which had the error & the special edition dvd did not have it

It's definitely a better encode, but I couldn't discern any new detail. It looks like the same transfer to me. Like I said, maybe it already looks as good as it can (and it does look fine to me), but it was hardly the jump in quality people were hoping for when it finally came out.

It's too bad Goodfellas (or Amadeus) isn't an obscure cult film because it would have received better treatment on home video.

Yeah. Reviews state the same thing pretty much from what I remember. Just a wee tad better looking cuz of the encode The Fugitive.
