To me it looks like they just improved the existing transfer. The framing is slightly different, the colors less red, and the encoding is miles better, but I'd be surprised if they did a new scan of the elements for the anniversary edition.

Opinions on the "Director's Cut" (I use the term loosely since Milos Forman has stated the theatrical version is his preferred version) aside, the Amadeus BD is one of the best Blu-rays I've seen. The picture is amazing. However, The Neverending Story was touted as being remastered then when the reviews started coming in, it turns out it was the same old transfer.

I'm trying to understand what the point of the Diamond Luxe gimmick is if WB won't release a film like GoodFellas under the banner. Unless that just hasn't been mentioned yet.

According to that other forum, these have either a new master or a new encode:

The Fugitive
Enter the Dragon
Lethal Weapon 1 & 2
Full Metal Jacket
Casablanca
Superman: The Movie (extended)
Blazing Saddles
The Road Warrior
Deliverance (?)

Also from there:

Cautiously optimistic.

I am fairly certain that both Blazing Saddles and The Road Warrior were both simply new encodes, but the same video transfers found on the older Blu-ray editions. I thought Deliverance was even the same encode. Maybe that got re-encoded too, but it isn't a new transfer.

I have most of those, they're all new encodes, not new masters, though most of them don't really need it like Goodfellas does.

Yeah. Most of those are new encodes.

Enter the Dragon was a remaster for sure. Got some unneeded color timing.

I was less than impressed with whatever they did to Enter The Dragon on its remaster. I don't believe they gave it a new film scan at all, but simply tweaked colors and gave it a new encode.

The Fugitive, Enter the Dragon, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, and Full Metal Jacket were all new 1080p transfers to fix the aliasing issues with the original Blu-rays (which came from 1080i masters that had been deinterlaced at the studio).

Casablanca also had a new transfer.

With 4K around the corner I think they will actually do a remaster this time. After, this was one of their first releases on both DVD and Blu-ray, so they'll want to have it ready to go on 4k (in whatever form that may be).

A remaster doesn't necessarily mean having greater detail.

Per Josh's comment, the original BD had obvious aliasing that is cleared up on the newer release and looks much better. The aliasing was distracting to me watching Enter the Dragon on my projector, so I was very thankful for the transfer.

I understand that. My point was that in the case of the Fugitive they were probably working from the same 2k or hd scan that they used for the original release. The end result was a (much) better version of the original transfer. Or maybe I'm wrong and they did a brand new scan and transfer that just happens to look exactly like the old one without all the horrible aliasing and encoding problems.

Question: The remaster on that one goes for the these two, yes? Or just one of these two?

Spoiler:

I believe those two are both the remaster, but Warner has reissued this movie so many times it's hard to keep track.

I believe that the problematic titles from Warner's first wave of Blu-rays were all sourced from really, really old HD masters that were originally created at 1080i. My understanding is that the movies had to be rescanned to get true progressive transfers.

I don't have the Fugitive remaster (never really cared for the movie), but I'm told that it has better colors and slightly more detail than the old release, in addition to fixing the aliasing. The flub with the crewmember's face in the shot after the train wreck has also been digitally painted out.

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

This could be it. FINALLY. A good BD of the film.

I'm still cautious though till we get more reports on that. WB is a strange strange beast w/ their Home Video division.

So glad it's confirmed of being remastered, and being supervised by Scorsese.

Didn't Scorsese "supervise" the LAST version?

Re: Goodfellas 25th Anniversary Edition (05/05/15)

Does anyone know what the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 10th Anniversary Edition is going to look like? It sounds like it's going to be the same packaging (2 discs and a book).

Great news. Wonder if they're going to use a digibook release for this. The fact that it includes a 36 page book means that it won't be a Diamond Luxe packaging. Wonder if they've abandoned them yet.

Shit?

And not just because the movie is shit, but I know Burton purposely made it glossy/soft so I highly doubt it'll ever look sharp and spectacular.

Not really digging the coverart. Lame they'd drop Pesci like that.

Especially since Pesci's the one that won an Oscar.
