Project Pop Art - Best Buy Exclusive Steelbooks

I just stopped by Best Buy and noticed their amazing collection of exclusive Steelbooks. They commissioned artists to design cover art for Sony catalog titles and they did an awesome job. I'm tempted by a bunch of these:

Link to larger images here.

They're $14.99 each. Not cheap, but there's no way I'm not getting at least The Karate Kid. Cobra Kai RULES!!!!!

Not a fan of those to be honest. Tommy looks good, but I don't like that movie enough to own it.

I like several of the covers. Would like them even more at $9.99

I don't get it, why do this? I admit, I like them better than the Mondo garbage, but I wouldn't pay more than $6.99 for these, especially since we get no new content or remasters.

Worth mentioning, I read that The Fifth Element contains the disc with the old transfer.

I hope these go down to $10 some time in the future, as I would love to pick up Leon & The Raid.

I like the Leon and Das Boot art. I'd buy those if they go on sale for $9.99.

I saw Kung Fu Hustle at my store. Anyone know if the blu version contains the more violent directors cut? (some blood was digitally erased for the original US release)

Some of these are nice.
I might double dip on A few of these if they go on sale for under $10.

I'll buy them all when they're $6.99 and include the UV code.

I would get the Leon and Raid ones if they were cheaper. The Karate Kid one is cool because Daniel isn't on it.

Any artwork on the inside? Big drawback to most of these catalog steelbooks is the lack of artwork on the inside.

Especially since I already own some of those with the regular cover and I paid $5 for each.

No artwork, but they are filled with a solid color pulled from the outer design, such as Drive with a pink interior and The Fifth Element with a blue interior.

Here's a video showcasing a lot of the designs:

I'm not a fan of any of these, although I never understood the love for those Mondo posters and artwork either.

The ones for Drive and The Karate Kid are decent. I'm not a big enough fan of either film (or steelbooks for that matter) to order either of them though. Maybe when they drop in price.

It's nice to see effort and creativity put into packaging these days. It's not going to cause me to run out and buy one but the effort is admirable.

For me, I still prefer when they use the original theatrical poster artwork. Maybe they'll use this type of art for upcoming theatrical releases.

These look pretty impressive in person at the store. Most Best Buys have an endcap filled with them. They seem to be popular, some movies are completely sold out from what I saw two weeks ago.

This trend always yields mixed results. I find a lot of these pop culture inspired art posters have a real "high school art room" feel

That sucks. Probably would buy more of them if they were the same quality as new release steelbooks.

Still may buy the Tommy one day if it ever goes down in price. It's the only one on the list I don't alreayd have in another form and I don't like any of the designs enough to double dip.

I agree, although most original theatrical poster art has also sucked for the last 20 years or so.

And beyond that, the teaser art is often better than the actual theatrical posters.

Far too often the theatrical art is just showing the actors in the movie. Often just a bunch of head shots. Unless we're talking something sexy, who wants that? :shrug"

No, the older Fifth Element transfer was terrible looking.
