Hopefully. He said there'd be no individual notice (e-mail or something like that) that the replacements were shipping as that would only slow them down. They'll just show up.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

Sounds like I'll be packing my titles up (including the OOP ones) and shipping them out next week then.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

I haven't sent anything in yet, but has anyone that has, received replacements or a time table for such yet?

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

I have not sent anything in, but from what I've read in various places, no replacements have been sent out yet. I think replacement discs won't be ready for another week or two. Also, reportedly Criterion is telling people to send in the oop discs as they will be replaced.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

So where's this "official list" that they're replacing? Or should I just go ahead and send whatever disc I have that's bronzed? Should I send non-bronzed discs that are on the list?

The "official" list is as follows:

SUMMER HOURS
WALKABOUT
PARIS, TEXAS
M
THE SEVENTH SEAL
PIERROT LE FOU
HOWARDS END

At least those were the titles listed in their initial e-mail. I don't think they've officially named any others at this point. I know plenty of people have been asking about others, but I'm not sure what Criterion's stance is at this point.

My Kagemusha and Monsoon Wedding are also toast as well as my 8 1/2 being partially jacked. There are some more suspects that Criterion needs to be looking into. Just put one of your staff on it and get the list updated, get that updated list out to your customers and exchange the discs.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

Apparently the replacement discs are starting to be delivered. I've read multiple reports online of people having received theirs in the last day or so.

I think October 8th was when I mailed it off. Though from reading the earlier posts, it sounds like Criterion was waiting a bit before sending out the replacements. Perhaps it will be a quicker turnaround if you mail them out now.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

Well, Criterion received my discs at 1:28pm this afternoon. The waiting begins.

Have any other discs been arriving for people?

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

I know the bronzing of Well Go USA titles were mentioned here.

They have announced a replacement program for all affected titles:

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

My copy of Howard's End has one of the "bad" serial numbers, but no visible discoloration. I scanned through the disc from beginning to end in my Blu-ray player, and it didn't freeze up anywhere. I'm hesitant to send it in unless I hear confirmation that Criterion is definitely replacing it with a copy of the same movie (and not some alternate title).

I suppose I should find the time to watch the movie properly, but I'm just in no mood to watch Howard's End right now.

Have the added the Yojimbo/Sanjuro Box Set yet? I believe I have read that others have found their copies of those are affected.

Well, that was short wait (probably helps that I'm just 4 or so subway stops away from their office) . I just received all of my replacement discs:

WALKABOUT
PARIS, TEXAS
M
THE SEVENTH SEAL
PIERROT LE FOU
HOWARDS END

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

I sent my discs in the week of Christmas and the replacements arrived today.

Walkabout
Howard's End
Pierrot Le Fou
The Seventh Seal

Pretty quick turnaround! I think some of the disc faces are different than the originals, but I can't be certain without seeing a side by side.

edit: Looking at some pictures on google image search confirms my suspicions. They are different images.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

Bringing this thread back from the dead to remind people that Criterion still replaces these. I never dealt with this issue and finally went back through all my potential discs. Only Walkabout and M were defective. Both had major playback issues, but only Walkabout was bronzed.
Two discs isn't terrible and they are being replaced unlike Warner. I have a stack of about 50 Warner Bros HD-DVDs and DVDs that no longer play and the replies I got were basically too bad on those.

To replace these Criterions now you just have to send photos of the discs and they mail you out replacements. You don't have to mail in the old discs.

Re: Criterion - disc rot/'bronzing'

I've got so many unwatched discs, including Criterion, I sometimes worry if these companies will still be around by the time I watch them.
