Re: How do you rent your movies?

I have zero interest in streaming or downloading rentals for $2.99 to $5.99. It will never happen.

If that was the only option, I would turn my back on movies just like I did with music. I havn't spent a nickel on music in the last 10+ years.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

In order of frequency, Netflix mail service, Redbox (mostly freebies), and occasionally Amazon/itunes rentals. I used to get a ton of Amazon rentals back when HitBliss was a thing. In the last few weeks, I have been going to the library and have started borrowing stuff for free. They have a decent selection at the local branch and a ton of stuff in the city's system that I can get as an inter-library loan from other branches. I figure I may as well get something back for the thousands of dollars I pay my city in local taxes.

So you prefer not to pay for your entertainment?

No, but if I'm renting something, I'll either pay $1.50 at Redbox, or waiting to get it at the library a few months later for free. Not paying $5 for a one-time rental. The Netflix buffet is different in that I'm getting all kinds of stuff. And I'm not paying Walmart.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

It looks like you and I are the only ones using video stores any more. Of course availability is essential. My uncle keeps pushing me to the library but I haven't gotten there yet. He claims all the benefits previously stated. New releases, hold for 7, keep for 7, free. Not sure why I've been so lazy about it.

I prefer not to pay $2.99 to $5.99 for digital rentals. I also have no interest in paying $15 to $20 for DVD/Bluray purchases.

I actually do not bother with the promo codes for free Redbox rentals. The $1.20 rental price is very reasonable, so I'm more than happy to "pay for my entertainment".

I would estimate about 1 out of 4 movies I watch are worth seeing (at best). That comes out to $4.80 at Redbox prices for every movie I actually enjoy watching.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

I typically go three ways: checkout from the library, stream from Amazon, and occasionally Redbox it.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

If I had a video store local to me, I would probably support them.

As it stands now (and likely for a long time to come), Redbox and the local library are my only options.

Video stores are dead. Physical media altogether will be dead soon I fear. Alas, it is the price of progress.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

Redbox for physical disc rentals.
Vudu for digital rentals.

I don't use either very often at all, but they're pretty much the only services I use for paid time-limited rentals.

Maybe if Redbox shuts down. Despite all the digital hype, Redbox rentals are a large part of the market.

And what's the largest part of the digital market? $8/mo Netflix subscriptions, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.

What's the future of digital? Rising prices from your ISP (cable companies).

Re: How do you rent your movies?

Maybe Universal signed a new deal with somebody so Netflix could not carry Universal movies like Non-Stop, Walk of Shame, Sabotage, and Bad Words.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

I've started to purchase cheap DVDs ($3 or < or movies on further sale) from Big Lots, since watching them at that price is actually cheaper than Netflix disc rentals (at the rate I can get through them). When I'm done, I try to trade them in for credit at my local used DVD stores. Works out pretty well

Netflix stills carries Universal titles. I eventually got them about a month after the release date. Future Universal titles like Neighbors will have a 4 week delay like many of the other studios.

Rent from a physical location.

I'm walking distance from the best video store in San Diego.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

The last movie I rented was possibly on VHS. I'm still much more interested in "old release" DVD's, which I buy.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

I've moved on from physical rentals. Mostly use VUDU. Sometimes DTV or iTunes.

I might rent like one title a month, if that. I used to blind buy a lot of discs but the resale market is gone and when I don't have the disc in front of me, I tend to forget about what movies I wanted to see. So the end result is I'm spending less in general on movies I haven't see before.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

Netflix mail service? So Netflix still does physical media rentals? For some reason, I thought they were all streaming now. What is their pricing? I looked on their website, and it looks like I have to register to find anything. That's dumb. Why should I have to register just to see their pricing.

Thanks. Are the DVDs/BDs generally in good shape? I currently check them out for free from my local library, and if its not a new release movie then it generally has many scratches which cause skipping/freezing issues when I try to watch.

Re: How do you rent your movies?

Since I've been on the Blu-ray plan I've never gotten a bad disc. When I was on the DVD plan I would get scratched discs occasionally but most were still playable. I think I've only had one or 2 discs ever that we're unplayable.
