Disney holds the rights domestically. It's with Studio Canal in Europe.

Paramount released a Blu-ray in Japan, licensed from Studio Canal. Unfortunately, it's a pretty crummy old transfer with a lot of bad DNR.

THE STRAIGHT STORY is my favorite Lynch film. It's also the least "Lynch" of the Lynch films.

If you haven't seen it, just watch NEBRASKA on Blu-ray.

Seconded. And a restored version of "The Bat" (1926) has apparently been languishing in the UCLA vault for too many years.

In a completely different direction, "The Complete Tex Avery at MGM" in one or two volumes, restored and with commentaries and extras, similar to the Looney Tunes Golden Collections.

Is it "not even worth upgrading from DVD" crummy, or "It's crummy, but still worth getting even if you have the DVD" crummy?

They also own the rights to Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but The Year of Living Dangerously, which may be my favorite Peter Weir film.

For some reason I thought there was a difference when Disney releases something under "Walt Disney Pictures" (child oriented) and "Touchstone Pictures" (adult oriented) logos and the distribution rights, but I could be wrong.

It's an improvement over DVD, and I'd be inclined to say that it's worth getting if it weren't so damned expensive. Unfortunately, it's very hard to justify importing for that reason.

Re: Criterion Wish List

I really want Bille August's The Best Intentions (333 minute - mini-series cut)

I've given up on Criterion releasing Jean Renoir's The River

I was thinking it was a Touchstone or Hollywood title. But I see it's Disney-branded.

Still, Touchstone and Hollywood are straight up Disney brands that are used for movies that might not be 100% family-friendly as opposed to something like Miramax which was owned by Disney but still operated under its own rules.

But as a Disney title I'd say you're more likely to see The Straight Story as part of that exclusive Blu-ray line they recently started.

Yeah, I can understand that. Shipping from Japan to Canada, it looks like I'd be at about $29 CAD all-in. I've paid more for some titles... but it's kind of steep.

Re: Criterion Wish List

Almost anything by Zhang Yimou, but especially Raise the Red Lantern! Also, Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertolucci and, again, almost anything from Francois Ozon.

I'd like La Luna & The Conformist from Bertolucci and I agree about Francois Ozon.

I will also add anything from Bruno Dumont and Michael Haneke.

Re: Criterion Wish List

I'd also LOVE to see a John Sayles box set with Return of the Secaucus Seven, Lianna, The Brother from Another Planet , Matewan, City of Hope, Passion Fish, Lone Star and Men With Guns. Maybe a Cassavetes style box set for the major works and an eclipse set for some for his lesser works that never received dvd release.

The Maltese Falcon would be pretty sweet. The current edition is fine but nothing special. It deserves special.

Re: Criterion Wish List

I'd like to see The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. It's been on the movie channels in hd but, it's not available on blu or even dvd anymore. And I know it's pretty sleazy but Body Double is one of my favorite De Palma movies. And I wonder when we'll get Short Cuts on blu? Also, Ready to Wear is another film shown on the movie channels in hd that needs the criterion treatment.

Ditto on Peter Greenaway; there are ok editions if you look hard enough, but he is sorely under-represented on Criterion.

from what I've read - The Cook, The Thief was released on bluray in Mexico only. (it might be out of print though - I can't tell).

Nighwatching - Swedish release

Baby of Macon - Swedish release

Goltzius and the Pelican Company - just released UK release

but yes... a deluxe bluray box collection from Criterion would rock

IMHO it's doubtful Criterion would bite or that Warner would say "yes", but keep in mind the film's 75th anniversary comes in 2016. The current Blu actually has less content than the DVD's, and they carried over that awful commentary, so there is definitely room for improvement.
