I never understood the love for Flashpoint Paradox, maybe because I'm not a huge Flash fan. But Under the Red Hood is probably the best Batman animated movie they have done so far (with The Dark Knight Returns as a close second).

I also highly recommend Justice League Doom & Justice League War

Spoiler:
Batman seems to be a supporting character in this story. He only makes a brief appearance at the beginning and then doesn't reappear until after the halfway point. This is most definitely a movie about the villains.
Aside from that I enjoyed the story and even a couple of the twist and turns it took.

Of course take my recommendation lightly because I have very little experience in DC's animated films. This is only the third Batman animated film I've seen. I'd say it wasn't nearly as good as The Dark Knight Returns but was a lot better than Son of Batman. Just my opinion of course.
Thanks for the review. What you spoilerized was mentioned in some other reviews I've read and is also made clear in one of the DC promotional videos for this release. I think I'm going to skip it for now.

I bought it. I enjoyed it. I will mirror what GoldenJCJ said.

Spoiler:
Batman is hardly in this. He's in the beginning, shows up again in the 2nd half of the movie and has a fight at the end. It really is about the bad guys, so to speak. It was cool seeing several characters who I didn't have familiarity with (King Shark and Black Spider). I enjoyed it for what it was. I was actually surprised at some of the sexuality of it. Some double entendres and essentially a PG-13 sex scene.

While it wasn't the best Batman direct to video movie, it was entertaining. It certainly helped having Conroy and Pounder in their familiar roles.

Call me crazy but
Spoiler:
Batman's reduced screen time
makes me want to see it even more.

If it were JUST Suicide Squad, with maybe a Batman cameo, it would have been SO much better. Instead it tries to satisfy too many masters and ends up coming really short on both ends. It's basically two plotlines uncomfortably shoe-horned together into one mediocre movie. 5 / 10 from me.

I liked it OK, actually. For sure toward the bottom half of the DCUA line, but I was entertained. 3.25/5

I just saw this and thought it was quite good. I love the story premise.

Just know going into it that Batman is not main focus and do not rip them for it.

Re: Batman: Assault on Arkham -- August 12th, 2014

Got my copy in the mail yesterday and watched it last night. I really enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm not as familiar with the Suicide Squad comics but the film really worked for me. It had a good flow and I liked the characters and honestly I think a credit to Batman's universe is that there's so many interesting characters in it that can hold their own in a film and not necessarily have to rely on Batman himself being there the whole time to make it interesting. The voice cast was all good in this and I just have to say I'm so glad we got Conroy as Batman (disappointed that the extras show the next film we get Jason O'Mara as Batman who I really dislike as the character). Overall a solid entry to the DCAU in my opinion.

Loved it. Really cool starting from the "Bad Guys" side and then bringing everyone together.

Very "realistic" for a SuperHero animated movie.

DC seems to be going for the more mature (sometimes too much) ratings, in both animation and live action movies. Neither good nor bad, just is.

In terms of violence, is it like War or The Flashpoint Paradox? Because the latter got away with a lot while still being awarded a PG-13 rating.

It pushes the boundaries of the PG-13 rating. I would feel uncomfortable showing this to pre-teens unless they are already little psychos.

People will be disappointed because this is not a Batman movie. It's really a Suicide Squad movie heavily featuring Harley Quinn and Batman's Rogues Gallery. I liked it but it's not perfect.

Target cheated people by making the steelbook available in super-limited quantities. Unless you showed up before 10 A.M., good luck buying one at retail price.

Correct, PG-13+. Really not for those under 13. Marvel/Disney could never get away with this.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. They really pushed that PG-13 rating and it worked.

Re: Batman: Assault on Arkham -- August 12th, 2014

I watched it today and loved every minute of it. I really wish we'd get an Arkham game with the Suicide Squad but this will do for now.

Also, though familiar with the Squad from the comics, I was not expecting all the kills in the movie. Or how harsh it was. I'd say it was more hardcore than Flashpoint Paradox.

I wouldn't go so far as to say more hardcore than Flashpoint Paradox. Not by a long shot. Grifter getting arrowed multiple times in the head was more graphic than Arkham was in its entirety.

I would rank it #2 in terms of violence, though.

How Flashpoint got a PG-13 rating is one of the mysteries of the universe.
