The Lego Movie - 5/27/14

Thought this was interesting. 3D versions were up for presale for $30 and were canceled so a new, more expensive version was put in it's place for $45. Now it comes with a "bonus" 3D copy of the movie . Guess they thought they could take advantage since the movie is a box off hit.

Anyways, we didn't get a chance to catch it in theaters, but with the glowing reviews, we'll probably pick up the 2D version when it comes out. Hopefully there will be some store exclusives.

Amazon UK has the 3D version up for pre-order as well. Might be cheaper going that way.

I've heard the 3D makes it difficult to catch all the jokes, because so much is packed into each frame. I've seen it two or three times in 2D and at no point did I think, "Man, I wish this were in 3D."

I thought the 3D was pretty decent when I saw it in the theater. I also had the feeling that I was missing some of the jokes though too, so I definitely need to see this again.

An awful big gap between the theatrical run and home release. You have to wonder how many will remember or care to see this again by that time.

Oh, I'm sure that the audience of kids alone will make the DVD a blockbuster, not even counting the adult audience.

They learned from Frozen's mistake

Don't release your movie on DVD when it's still in the top 10 in theaters

Yeah but the Lego movie has been out of the top 10 for weeks. It does seem like a rather long release window.

Has there been a press release or anything? Hopefully it can be brought forward.

This past weekend was the first time it landed out of the top 10...and it finished 11th.

It just fell out of the top 10 this past weekend (where it landed in 11th place)

EDIT: Shannon beat me to it

I just believe that it is better to stoke the fire while it is hot than wait until there is nothing left and people move on. As much as the studio might want to believe The Lego Movie isn't anywhere close to being what Frozen is even if it is actually the more enjoyable movie.

Are you really suggesting that people are going to forget about this movie in 4 months time? I'm sure that there is marketing data that says what the optimal release window is, and I have no idea if this falls within that window or not, but to say that this movie will be forgotten by August seems absurd to me. There's still at least a half dozen theaters within 15 miles of my house that are playing this for crying out loud.

Nope, I have a 3D TV, two 3D capable players (one is a PS3 so I don't really count it), two pairs of 3D glasses, and several 3D Blu-rays.

Believe it or not, most people don't care for 3D and think it actually takes away from the viewing experience, not adding to it.

i like the 3D on the movies i have seen at home. Up, Tangled, etc...
never felt for a second that this wasn't something grand. it was so visually stunning and i will continue to support the format.

I don't believe it, because people happily pay a couple dollars extra to see it at theaters practically every time it's offered. I can only find two instances of 2D tickets outselling their 3D counterparts: Deathly Hallows 2 and Green Lantern. With DH2 it's easy to understand: DH1's 3D release was canceled and what was left was half of a 2-part movie that didn't match it's companion film, not to mention the other six films. So I'll give you Green Lantern. The people who thought it was a good idea to pay money to see Green Lantern seem to agree that 3D sucks. A major victory for sure.

It's no coincidence that the 3D backlash is largely championed by a group of consumers who invested in a pre-3D version of the tech.

If 3D had been part of the HDTV and Blu-ray spec we wouldn't be having this conversation.

As for this movie, I saw it in 3D only so I can only imagine all the jokes that the 3D faerie shot behind me and under my seat and outside of the auditorium so I'm looking forward to having all those hilarious jokes beamed directly into my eyeholes in that earnest 2D fashion I've come to love.
