TOBE HOOPER: Working with the color grading, working with the 7.1 sound mix, working with very good people. It was the work a director should do to keep his film preserved. I’m not tooting my own horn — well, I am — but there are other directors that saw [the restoration] and there is a great deal of excitement from them."
Tobe, listen carefully, this film did not have any greenish hues in it. James Cameron is an asshole for what he did to Aliens. You don't want to be an asshole too.

There was no greenish teal in Aliens. The lab room with the fachuggers had a pinkish glow originally. The blu-ray is cleaned up nicely, but the color-grading is disgusting. It is much worse on Aliens than what he did to T1.

Essentially every movie that's ever been transferred from one medium to another goes through color grading. That goes back decades and decades and decades, way before home video or anything even a little bit digital.
I mean, there could be some revisionist screwups in there, but that's not inherently what color grading is or anything.

True... but lately someone mentions they're working with the colors and... Well... It gets scary. Friedkin better not fuck up Sorcerer. Comes out next month, no?

It sounds like they're doing the right thing:
Also from that article:
One, you can make the oversampling argument, although I don't know how much of a practical difference that'd make here. Two, there's no negative for 'Saw, so they might be doing this for archival purposes too. Three, if the sample images at Bloody Disgusting are any indications, it looks like they might be scanning the full ~1.33:1 image rather than just extracting the center, and I can see how that would make 4K more appealing...gives you more options. Four, MPI/Dark Sky doesn't have a huge library or anything, so it's not as if this 4K transfer is coming at the expense of a more worthy movie.
Estimating that he spent about 50 hours on the color correction alone, NOLO Colorist Michael Matusek used a previous transfer of the film that had been supervised by Tobe Hooper as his guide to a rough color correction. Tobe Hooper then gave notes on this roughly timed version, and the process of adjusting the color began.
This is the only transfer of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to go back to the original 16mm A/B rolls, the actual film that rolled through the cameras.

Yeah it's really one of the first slasher films. Whether or not that's a good thing or not I suppose is debatable but as a fan of horror and slasher films it's an important piece of the genre's history. I'll be honest this was actually never one of my favorites but there's no denying it is a classic.
I understand that 4K is sexy from a marketing perspective but it's largely wasted on a movie of this nature.
Damn, that sucks. I guess I'll hang onto my Quadrilogy boxed set then. Why the hell can't Cameron leave well enough alone? Again, I suppose it's the dark side of digital. Lets change it! Why? Because we can! Do you have any pics? And I'm betting a re-release of it with the proper color timing wouldn't be anywhere in sight even if Cameron did get his head out.

It didn't just look like that on DVD, VHS, etc. It looked like that theatrically. When they discover the lab with the huggers, the pinkish red gave off a sense of danger, now Camtard makes it look like Burke has the flu.

God, that is hideous. Fucking Cameron. And after he spoke out against Lucas too. Digital is great for many reasons, but this kind of revisionism is a very dark side effect, IMO.
Anyway, what is OAR for TCM? I think most of the DVD releases have been 1.78.

I like the left one. Why is it pink on the right? There's no sense of "danger" in that one. Don't get me wrong, I'm not for tampering with the visual aesthetic of a film, and I'm not one of these teal and orange defenders but the Alien's Blu-ray looks great.

That Aliens change is pretty drastic. I guess I haven't watched an older older copy of the film and am not that hardcore of a fan of the franchise so I didn't notice it. I do admit I sort of like the re-done image a bit more but I'm not a fan of changes of any sort being made unless there's an option to get the original version alongside the re-done version.

So 1.78 is basically correct. Got to see a midnight screening recently, was pretty jazzed. Sadly turned out yah at they were just projecting the DVD, but it was a college town, so fun crowd. People who actually knew what I was talking about . Wonder if they'll do a DCP of the new encode?

Red, it's subliminal. Danger, stop signs, fire trucks, warning labels, etc. Teal in Aliens, subliminal for you better go buy your Viagra.
Anxious to hear reports after the Monday night showing of TCM.

Teal in new films doesn't bother me, it's how they are being filmed.

In regards to Aliens, the film was shot on Eastman Color High Speed Kodak 5294 (T400). A film stock that came out prior to filming and was discontinued shortly thereafter due to the amount of issues filmmakers were having with it.
I personally have no problems with the Blu-ray as it actually looks great based upon the fact the source material is shit. Fox and Cameron took care of the materials. The same couldn't be said for Demons 2 (despite the awesome job Synapse did with what they were given).

It didn't magically alter colors. Aliens wasn't intended to look teal. It's like going back and adding drastically gated snare to every Beatles song.

Especially since all previous video releases haven't looked that way, no any projected prints. And given that Cameron did the same to T1, it's clearly a brand of revisionism which he wants to practice.

I'm not denigrating Texas Chainsaw Massacre or its influence, it is one of the seminal movies in horror history. But there isn't 4K worth of resolution to be squeezed out of its camera negative, while many deserving 35mm films languish with bad 2K scans.
I understand that 4K is sexy from a marketing perspective but it's largely wasted on a movie of this nature.

I'm sure many films will be getting a 4K (and an 8K, 16K 32K etc) in the future
regardless of the perceived quality of the film. I imagine when projected on a big theatre screen it will certainly benefit from 4K.
