Has anyone picked up the 3 Kraken BDs? I know FYE has had them out early.

I'm slightly tempted to get the Ghidorah/Mothra one since the DVD is pan and scan and I assume the Blu-ray is widescreen, but I consider them the two worst movies in the Heisei series (yes, I even like Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla more) and I'm not willing to spend more than five bucks or so to upgrade from my DVD.

The others I refuse to buy on basic principle, since they barely look any better than the DVDs, and Sony hasn't bothered to put any new extras on them.

Shit. I've never owned the Sony Heisei films on DVD. I got them all on VHS... Good ole dubbing days.

A poster over Toho Kingdom (tokyostateofmind) says the double feature releases actually have two English subtitle tracks, one being the SDH/captions and the other one the actual subtitles. Can someone else check their copies?

There are two English subtitle tracks, the default being the regular English. SDH requires menu navigation. I went through several minutes of both Space Godzilla and Mechagodzilla II, and the regular English subtitles and the English dub were almost word-for-word identical. This is the only double feature I've picked up on BD, so I can't speak about the rest.

Does anybody know if Son of Godzilla and the original Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla are now licensed to Kraken? Hopefully whether they have them, or Sony still does, one of them will release these 2 to coincide with the BD/DVD releases of the new Godzilla later this year.

If they do then Sony could release one more double-feature disc (with Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah [1991] and Godzilla vs. Mothra [1992]) as well as Godzilla 2000.

All we'd be waiting for is to find out what's happening with the 7 Classic Media titles that haven't shown up yet and Godzilla 1985 (eventually). This is, of course, assuming that the Megalon blu-ray advertised does actually come out this time.

Anyone have any news on what happened to the rights for the ones that Classic Media put out last?

Sony should still have those. Unless they went to CC somehow in that whole team up with them. But that's with Sony Pictures Classic and not regular Sony.

Criterion did release the original and the American version together. Very good BD.

Ugh. I didn't want to, but I'm going to order Ebirah, Hedorah, and Gigan. Barnes & Noble dropping them to $8.99 each was enough to pull me in, and I never had them on DVD.

I'm still not wasting my money replacing my Heisei and Millennium DVDs, though.

EDIT: "Usually available in 1-2 weeks." Oh well. Placed the order anyway.

I picked up the four double packs tonight. I wonder if we'll get some of the other missing in action titles eventually. I'd probably buy them all just to for completion sake. I still need to get the other titles that are out too as I only have the Criterion edition of the original film aside from these eight.

I highly recommend picking up the Godzilla DVD Collection (UPC: 796019804561) from Classic Media. It's going for about $20 on Amazon, or $25 on eBay with free shipping. The Classic Media DVDs are pretty terrific, giving you both the Japanese and American cuts of each movie, usually along with some pretty good extras. This set includes:

Godzilla (1954)
Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
All Monsters Attack (1969)
Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

You've already got the original Godzilla on the Criterion release, but the Classic Media DVD has its own commentaries and extras. The other films give you a very good sampling of the Showa era (1954-1975), from the excellent serious movies (Mothra vs. Godzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla) to the good silly films (Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster) to the bad silly films (All Monsters Attack), and everything in between. As eager as I was to pick up the Blu-rays of Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, and Godzilla vs. Gigan, the movies listed above are far more essential for someone who doesn't already own the Showa era films, and mostly not available on Blu-ray.

The Sony double-feature sets (alongside the 4K edition of the '98 American remake) are currently $10.99 a pop on Amazon.

I missed that sale. Fahk. Ah well, picked up two of the double feature sets at Target. For some reason, they only carried two (their website only lists two of them as well so, I don't know).

From what I remember, Sony no longer has the rights to those two movies, and Toho was negotiating with someone to release them.

It was rumored that Kraken had them and would release them when the new movie came out on DVD/blu-ray, but so far there has, so far, been no official word from anyone.

So it could be Kraken, maybe Sony will get them back, someone else, or Toho's playing hardball and asking for too much.
