Monsters University 3D Blu-ray - 10/29/2013

No DMR/Scott Brands coupon? Boo.

This is coming in 3 editions:

Blu-ray/DVD Combo
Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy "Collector's Edition"
Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy "Ultimate Collector's Edition"

Also, Target is apparently getting an exclusive DVD bonus disc:

I think the 2D combo pack has a better cover:

given the 3D didn't impress me and I do like the 2D cover art - I might buy that version.

Well, at least Target will be CARRYING the 3D version of this, though they still won't sell too many if it's overpriced!

I would suggest to anyone thinking of getting the Target 3D version to go early because this might turn into another WWZ 3D situation where they only carry a handful per store.

Damn, wasn't expecting a bonus disc, I was just planning on getting this at DMC. Is that a first for a Pixar or Disney movie to have an exclusive bonus disc?

No, there have been bonus discs in the past for Ratatouille and the Pirates sequels at least. Probably others.

I didn't pre-order due to the lack of a coupon. I'll wait (a long time, given it's Disney) for a price drop.

The original release of Cars had a Target bonus disc and Cars 2 had a Toys 'R' Us bonus disc.

Re: Monsters University 3D Blu-ray - 10/29/2013

Did anyone else experience audio drop outs while watching the movie using the Dolby True HD track? We had between 5 - 7 last night. All short, but noticeable. Seems like people on the other forum had tons of problems with it as well. It was really a pain when it caused the pic to be out of sync with the audio. But after rewinding it for a couple seconds and starting it again, it was OK. Just a frustrating experience.

I rented the 2D disc (waiting for the 3D release to go down in price). No audio dropouts. However, I wasn't bitstreaming but rather had my PS3 output the already decoded audio as LPCM to my receiver.

Is there a benefit of doing that rather than letting your receiver decode it?

It occasionally solves audio decoding problems such as drop-outs. Sometimes the audio flags are improperly authored for bitstreaming and cause problems on a few receivers.

Another 3D review:

Yes! Glad to hear it's not just me. Three times mine started making a strange sound that I can only describe as a higher pitched machine gun kind of sound and seemed to have started fast forwarding. I read of one other person who described the fast forwarding also, so at least I'm not imagining it! For me it went away by rewinding a bit. Never had this condition before but had kind of chalked it up to the outdated audio decoder in my Oppo 83 (I am unable to bitstream). By the way, in my case this was with the 2D Blu.

I also just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is having all kinds of audio glitches with his and he is bitstreaming to a newer receiver. So this appears to be a widespread problem. Hopefully that means Disney will fix it up ASAP for us.

I really don't know why Disney/Pixar went with Dolby TrueHD instead of keeping with DTS, from what I've been hearing its been nothing short of problematic.

For whatever reason they seem to go back and forth between DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD. In my collection I have:

TrueHD:
Brave
Cars 3D
Finding Nemo
Monsters University

DTS-HD:
Cars 2
The Incredibles
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story 1-3
Up
Wall-E

correct, Brave was the first and then all the new releases afterwards including the 3D releases (which would include 'Monsters Inc.' and 'Cars' which for it's initial bluray release was LPCM 5.1)

Re: Monsters University 3D Blu-ray - 10/29/2013

Wish more discs would use uncompressed PCM sound. Anyways, the main reason to have your player send out other formats in PCM is so secondary audio like picture-in-picture commentaries and menu sounds can still be heard. The problem however is some Blu-Ray players don't have full DTS decoding and on HD tracks will drop any extra surround channels and of course the extra fidelity. My Oppo BDP-93 (which does have full DTS decoding) has an "Auto" setting and some Blu-Rays are flagged to output in PCM (even if they don't have any secondary audio) while others are flagged to just bitstream. My stupid Pioneer receiver won't apply EX decoding to 5.1 DTS HD tracks or even Pro-Logic to 2-channel DTS-HD, and I've ran into some discs where I have to manually switch it to PCM to make it work properly. If I keep the player in PCM all the time though, it drops the extra surround channel from DTS-ES tracks on standard DVDs.

Got the 3D Monsters University but won't have time to watch it for a while- are the dropouts also on the 3D version, and are there even any dropouts at all if output as PCM?
