Re: Indiana Jones Collection -- Fall 2012

Perhaps Lucas will put Star Wars : Empire Of Dreams on the Indiana Jones bonus disc. It would make as much sense as all of the other things he does.

I'm betting on next spring. It's been restored for Universal's 100th Anniversary, and next year will be the 20th anniversary of the film. The DVD was released in the spring.

You're actually laughing out loud because they aren't playing up the inclusion of a title that's already been available on Blu-ray for 4 years?

No, I think he's laughing out loud because they aren't playing up the inclusion of a title that no one likes or wants, but is being foisted upon buyers of this boxset, despite its prior availability.

It's a subtle distinction, but an important one.

I thought it was funny because they have to include at least one shot because it's called the "Complete Adventures." Almost like they don't even want to acknowledge KotCS exists.

Also re-watching it, there are actually 3 shots.

I both like and want Crystal Skull. Yes, it's the least of the four, but it's also better than four of the six Star Wars movies...so by George Lucas' standards, it's a good film (and by Spielberg standards...well, at least it's not The Lost World).

I saw the trialer on TV and as I was watching it I began to think, "wow is it a release of just the first three?" Then FINNALY after a huge stretch they throw in a clip from Kingdom and I had to laugh.

Here's a list of the bonus content for the fifth disc:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/07/...disc-revealed/

Not sure what was previously on what set, but it looks like it only contains three of the featurettes from the KOTCS bonus disc: "Adventures in Post Production," "The Effects of Indy," and "Iconic Props."

It appears that everything from the original set's bonus disc is there, except the trailers (unless they are on the individual movie discs).

Some things appear to be missing from the single-disc "special edition" releases that came out in 2008, as well as a lot of the Crystal Skull extras.

I'm going based on the reviews on this site, as I can't dig out my DVDs right now.

That list could be incomplete, but this is Lucasfilm so it's really not surprising to me if they dropped extras. Given that the Star Wars set dumped practically everything from previous releases, I'm pleasantly surprised most of the original box set's material is on here.

EDIT: There are two different "Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark," with different running times. I'm assuming one of those is the feature from the original DVD box set. Could the other be the old network TV special? If so, cool...but it's annoying that the other network specials that aired in conjunction with the series aren't there.

Re: Indiana Jones Collection -- September 18, 2012

Just checked my 2003 bonus disc and can confirm that everything made it over to the Blu-ray fifth disc. Except for the trailers.

The first Making of Raiders listed is the one from the 2003 set. The second one looks to be the original TV special.

00:50:47:00 (THE MAKING OF RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) - (2003 bonus disc)
00:41:05:00 (THE MAKING OF INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM) - (2003 bonus disc)

Re: Indiana Jones Collection -- September 18, 2012

And here's all the stuff that didn't make it over to the bonus disc:

The Adventures of Indiana Jones (2003) - Bonus Materials - Aaron Beierle's review

Spoiler:
Although Paramount's special features for the "Indiana Jones" trilogy are missing some desired features (a commentary from anyone involved) and don't take the format to the next level in the way that the features of some sets have, this fourth disc does have plenty that will thrill fans of the films.

The biggest supplement on the fourth disc is "The Making of the Trilogy", a 126-minute documentary that is separated into three sections, each ("Raiders" ends at about 50 minutes, "Doom" ends at about 90, the rest is "Crusade") covering the making of one of the three films. The documentary is a pretty remarkable mixture of fun new interviews and surprising "that had to be sitting in someone's closet kind-of-thing" behind-the-scenes footage of the actors and crew having fun on set (Spielberg chatting up an uncooperative snake, who appears confused about what the bearded man is saying to it) and trying to work out the scenes. Beyond that, there's some terrific additional footage that I wouldn't expect to see or have available, such as screen tests with some of the other choices for Indy (Tom Selleck, for example). While the participants are complimentary of those who didn't make it, the screen tests give one the idea that this wouldn't have gone on to three films or even two. The footage is in surprisingly good condition.

Ford, Spielberg, Lucas, Rhys-Davies, Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw, Connery, editor Michael Kahn, producer Frank Marshall, writer Laurence Kasdan and many others do participate in the newly recorded interviews. The interviews aren't the usual discussion of how wonderful the films turned out or how great it was to work with everyone; they're an insightful batch of fun stories (we learn more about the sickness the spread throughout much of the crew aside from Spielberg, who didn't sample the local cuisine; Spielberg chats about "renting" the submarine from the "Das Boot" production) and insightful casting, story and technical discussion.

There's also plenty of chat about the sequels, as Spielberg, Lucas and others chat about how "Doom" found itself turning towards darker waters, shooting in Venice and working with Connery for "Last Crusade". Although it doesn't completely satisfy as a replacement for commentaries, it's still a very well-done documentary that is good enough that it should hold solid replay value for fans.

Stunts of Indiana Jones: This 11-minute featurette has Ford, Spielberg, stunt coordinator Vic Armstrong and others discussing the stunts and how they were planned and rehearsed.

Sound of Indiana Jones: Spielberg and ace sound designer Ben Burtt discuss the different challenges of recording sound effects and creating a sound universe for the "Indiana Jones" films. Famed sound designer Gary Rydstrom ("T2", "Saving Private Ryan", "Finding Nemo")'s first credit happens to be "Temple of Doom" (as a sound technician, according to the Internet Movie Database), although he's not interviewed here.

Light and Magic of Indiana Jones: This 12-minute feature offers a look at the contributions of effects company Industrial Light and Magic to the "Indiana Jones" trilogy.

Music of Indiana Jones: This 12-minute piece looks at the work of composer John Williams, who discusses his work on the "Indiana Jones" trilogy and what it's like to work with both Lucas and Spielberg.

Indiana Jones: The Adventure Collection (2008) - Randy Miller III's review

Spoiler:
Bonus Material

Here's where things get a little tricky: we do get a decent collection of new extras here, but the excellent bonus disc from the 2003 box (which contained more than three hours of featurettes and promo material) is nowhere to be found. For the optimists: those who own both sets will have plenty to dig through...and none of it overlaps, conveniently enough. For the pessimists: the new material is hardly worth double-dipping for, especially with the combined lack of a technical upgrade.

Raiders of the Lost Ark leads off with an Introduction with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (7:48), mixing a bit of behind-the-scenes footage and production photos with recent talking head-style interviews. We're also treated to "Indiana Jones: An Appreciation" (11:40), featuring interviews with cast members of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as they look back on the trilogy with admiration and respect. This one can't help but feel promotional for obvious reasons, but it's worth a look nonetheless. Up next is "The Melting Face" (8:49) a brief technical featurette about the infamous death sequence in Raiders. This is one of the more enjoyable extras in the bunch, revealing a few practical secrets without giving too much away. Winding things down is a Storyboard Sequence for Raiders' "Well of Souls" scene (4:13), a handful of Photo Galleries (featuring illustrations, props, marketing and more) and a Game Trailer for "Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures". A Trailer for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also plays prior to the main menu.

Temple of Doom begins with another Introduction with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (5:48), featuring more behind-the-scenes footage and retrospective thoughts. "The Creepy Crawlies" (7:59) is up next, highlighting some of the hair-raising animals featured in each of the three films. "Travel With Indy: Locations" (9:02) is a like-minded featurette, bouncing around from film to film while discussing some of the landmark locales (NOTE: "Creepy Crawlies" and "Travel With Indy" both include optional pop-up trivia tracks). This second disc winds down with another Storyboard Sequence (this time, for Temple of Doom's "Mine Cart Chase" scene [2:30]), more Photo Galleries and the Trailers for the Lego game and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Last Crusade begins with another Introduction with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (6:13), and follows up with "Indy's Women: The American Film Institute Tribute" (9:22), a roundtable discussion with leading ladies Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw and Alison Doody. "Indy's Friends and Enemies" (10:46) continues the character focus, highlighting some of the memorable supporting characters from all three adventures. This third and final disc wraps up with another Storyboard Sequence (this time, for Last Crusades's Opening sequence [3:40]), more Photo Galleries and both Trailers already mentioned above. This is undoubtedly the lightest of the three discs, if only due to the lack of attention paid to the singular film at hand.

All bonus features are presented in anamorphic widescreen, while older snippets of promo material and behind-the-scenes footage are smartly window-boxed. Thankfully, optional English, Spanish and French subtitles are also included here, rounding out the overall presentation nicely. Overall, these new extras don't hold a candle to those found on the excellent 2003 bonus disc, but they're fairly entertaining and informative in their own right.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 2-Disc Special Edition - Brian Orndorf's review

Spoiler:
"The Return of a Legend" (17:37) traces Indiana Jones's journey back to the big screen, interviewing Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford on the development process than began in 1994. It was a long, winding road for the trio, with plenty of scripting setbacks during the 1990s, and a general reluctance from Spielberg to reopen the series after his poetic final shot in "Last Crusade." It's a bit of a whitewashed recollection (the recent Frank Darabont contribution is not mentioned), but the enthusiasm is palpable.

"Pre-Production" (11:47) observes the preparation for "Kingdom," taking a look at Spielberg and his pre-visualization demands, watching Ford ease back into character, and chatting with Bernie Pollack, Ford's personal costume man, who had the unenviable task of finding an armada of new fedoras and jackets that could withstand a beating during the shoot. The casting of Shia LeBeouf and the reintroduction of Karen Allen as Marion is also discussed.

Now, a little malarkey is thrown around in this featurette when cinematographer Janusz Kaminski arrives to discuss how Spielberg made sure "Kingdom" visually matched the previous films. I'll buy that for framing arguments, but for sharpness and adventuresome coloring? No way.

"Production Diary: Making 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'" (80:11) is a sprawling, comprehensive recount of filming, emerging from obvious promotional purposes (the actors are interviewed on the set), yet still captures the spirit of production and the monumental steps it took to bring Indiana Jones back to theaters (and now DVD).

Locations, sets, stunts, performances, silliness, direction, bugs, weather, special effects, snakes, hairdos, backlots, molds, costumes, ant juice, and marital hugs and kisses. It's all covered here, and with tremendous BTS footage to back up the effusive comments. A real treat for "Kingdom" fans.

"Warrior Makeup" (5:37) reveals the effort it took to turn average stuntmen into unholy temple guardians, interviewing department head Felicity Bowring and hair department honcho Kelvin R. Trahan about their accomplishments.

"The Crystal Skulls" (10:13) explores the myth of the titular object of power, with cast and crew lending their thoughts on the authenticity of the skulls. The conversation soon moves to the meticulous creation of the props, which needed to convey special weight and spooky, otherworldly architecture.

"Iconic Props" (10:04) meets with prop master Doug Harlocker and tours the warehouse where all the "Kingdom" goodies and inside jokes are kept during filming.

"The Effects of Indy" (22:44) begins with ILM digital artist Paul Huston discussing his history with the franchise, and its move from practical effects to the digital realm. The featurette observes the CG details of the frame, and how the "Kingdom" team often married live-action filming with digital enhancements. Miniature photography on the Doom Town sequence, Jungle Chase choreography, and adventures with the "big damn ants" are also covered in full.

"Adventures in Post-Production" (12:47) flips the coin to consider the extensive finishing moves on the "Kingdom" experience, interviewing editor Michael Kahn and sound designer Ben Burtt (and his son Benny Burtt) as they assemble the picture for release. The creation of the traditional Burtt sounds is mesmerizing to watch. Finally, John Williams shows up to elucidate his creative decisions during the scoring of the film. Hopefully this section of the supplements will finally silence the unfair criticism leveled at Williams and his superb musical work.

"Closing: Team Indy" (3:45) is essentially a high school yearbook of the key names and faces who worked on the film.

"Pre-Visualization Sequences" (14:10) shows the viewer "Area 51 Escape," "Jungle Chase," and "Ants Attack" in their earliest stages of development.

The "Galleries" section includes "The Art Department," "Stan Winston Studio," "Production Photographs," "Portraits," and "Behind-the-Scenes Photographs."

The Theatrical Teaser and final Trailer for "Kingdom" are included on this DVD, along with a look at the "Indiana Jones: Ultimate Action Hero" DVD commercial.

Finally, an XBOX 360 demo for the outrageously entertaining "Lego Indiana Jones" video game is included.

I suppose that it's possible for some or all of the content from the 2008 releases not included on the list of blu-ray bonus features to be included on the movie discs themselves. The above list only shows what is on the features disc.

Sure, but this guy did one that's way more comprehensive over on the blu-ray.com thread. Plus it's got like colors and stuff. I'll quote and repost it here:

This confirms that all the content (except the theatrical trailers, which may or may not end up on the main discs of their respective movies) from the bonus disc of the 2003 DVD set has been ported to the BD set's bonus disc, so it's almost completely safe to get rid of it.

-----------------------------

For whose who are wondering what's not included the BD set, here's what's missing (or at least not confirmed) from previous releases, sorted by where it can be found:

Missing Vintage Documentaries
- Great Movie Stunts: Raiders of the Lost Ark (47m43s) [1981 VHS/LD release]
- The Making of The Temple of Doom (51m22s) [Aired on PBS in 1984, never officially released on home video]
- Great Adventurers and Their Quests: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (46m17s) [1989 VHS/LD release]

Missing From 2003 Trilogy Bonus Disc
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Teaser Trailer (1m04s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Theatrical Trailer (2m34s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Re-Issue Trailer (1m40s)
- Temple of Doom Theatrical Trailer (1m26s)
- Last Crusade Teaser Trailer (1m29s)
- Last Crusade Theatrical Trailer (2m13s)
- Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb Game Trailer (1m47s)

Missing From Best Buy Exclusive 5th Bonus Disc (2003)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark Original 1981 EPK (9m56s)

Missing From Raiders of the Lost Ark 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- Raiders of the Lost Ark: An Introduction (7m48s)
- Indiana Jones: An Appreciation (11m40s)
- Storyboards: Well of Souls (4m16s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Temple of Doom 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- The Temple of Doom: An Introduction (5m59s)
- Storyboards: The Mine Cart Chase (2m31s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Last Crusade 2008 SE DVD
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer (1m55s)
- The Last Crusade: An Introduction (6m13s)
- Storyboards: The Opening Sequence (3m40s)
- Galleries (Illustartions & Props, Production Photographs and Portraits, Effects/ILM, Marketing)
- Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures Game Trailer (1m19s)

Missing From Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Warrior Makeup (5m37s)
- The Crystal Skulls (10m13s)
- Closing: Team Indy (3m45s)
- Previsualization: Area 51 Escape (3m54s)
- Previsualization: Jungle Chase (5m50s)
- Previsualization: Ants Attack (4m32s)
- Galleries (The Art Department, Stan Winston Studio, Production Photographs, Portraits, Behind-the-Scenes Photographs)
- Theatrical Trailer 2 (1m48s)
- Theatrical Trailer 3 (1m51s)
- Indiana Jones: The Ultimate Action Hero Trailer (1m08s)

-----------------------------

Obviously bits and pieces of the 3 "missing" vintage documentaries were incorporated into their 2003 successors, but I'm still somewhat disappointed that they aren't being included in their entirety like The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark is. Other than that, about 1.5 hours of other extant material from the 2008 DVDs of the 4 films is also missing (along with the 10-minute Raiders EPK), but it's still better than I initially expected.

Still, if you want to have every bonus feature ever released, you'll need to keep and/or acquire these:

- 2008 SE DVDs of the 1st 3 films
- Kingdom of the Crystal Skull [BD or 2-disc DVD]
- 2003 Best Buy exclusive bonus DVD with the Raiders of the Lost Ark EPK
- Great Movie Stunts & The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark [VHS or Laserdisc]
- Great Adventurers and Their Quests: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade [VHS or Laserdisc]
- 2003 DVD trilogy bonus disc (only if trailers aren't included in BD set)

The one big question I have is what the 2 parts of "On Set with Raiders of the Lost Ark" (From Jungle to Desert and From Adventure to Legend) entail, as it's the only "new" bonus material that's been listed anywhere for this release...

I was more surprised that Patrick Stewart is 72 (it's his birthday too!) than I was that Ford was 70. Both have been blessed with excellent genes.

So there's NO NEW MATERIAL at all on these discs? Or perhaps the new stuff is on the movie discs....

You must've missed the last sentence of the repost from blu-ray.com

Guess I'm sticking with the dvd box set from a few years ago. I really like the melting skull featurette.

Re: Indiana Jones Collection -- Fall 2012

Is that really all that is being released for extras? They are just porting over the DVD stuff? Why not a new documentary in the style of the Alien Quadrilogy stuff? Where are all the known deleted scenes? Why not license that put that fan-remake film that was all the hubub a few years back?

I was really excited about this, as this is my favorite franchise and Raiders is my favorite movie of all time, but if this is just a double dip box set, I'll just wait for Raiders to be released on it's own. I don't mind playing into their hands and dropping my cabbage for the set - and the remastered Raiders sounds awesome, but the rest sounds like a dump from a box set I already own on DVD.

Still labeling it as "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark", eh? Bleh.

With my gold box discount, my Amazon order is $65.54. That's low enough for me to buy, but I'm hoping Best Buy or Target will have it for around $59.99 on release day.
