Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

During a conversation with someone at SAE, it was strongly hinted that another sale is coming in November. So, I have compiled a list and the moment that sale is announced I'm gonna pounce on a whole lotta titles. I've made my last October purchase this past week. Unless there is a spectacular deal, I'm not spending a dime until the November flood gates open.... Barnes and Noble's Criterion sale, 40% off sale and the Screen Archive Entertainment sale will likely take the majority of my dough leading up to Christmas.

^Is it going to be a $10 a piece group sale like the current stuff or the normal $20 a piece sale? I never did really get a total of seven titles I wanted and was hoping for a few more to be added to the mix.

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

I asked the same question of the person I spoke to at SAE a couple of weeks ago. The person indicated that it was up to Twilight Time but it wasn't likely that new titles would be added to the current offer—7/$70 ending 10/15—but there was a new promotion likely in November. No details were offered but I'm betting the upcoming promotion is likely the $10 discount on older titles that we have seen in the past. I've decided to focus on Twilight Time's catalog and postpone picking up any studio fare unless it is heavily discounted for Black Friday. I've dumped so much dough into my collection that I am focusing on filling in titles OOP or those which have a limited availability through the end of the season. That's the plan anyway.

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

Okay, this is hands down, my most eagerly awaited release of 2016—"Moby Dick." Coming November 15th - pre-orders go "live" on Wednesday, Nov 2nd at 4 pm EST. I am struggling to decide whether to buy 2 copies. I know Twilight Time titles have not been going out-of-print that quickly but I just cannot take a chance of missing out on owning this film in high definition. Is it possible this could sell out in pre-order?

It's mostly been horror movies that sell out fast and even those haven't been selling as fast. Is there big demand for Moby Dick? Ron Howard's movie was a bomb.

This movie has never been given its due on home video...and how does the success or lack thereof of Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea," which is a fairly good film in its own right, foreshadow the success of "Moby Dick?" It's not based on Melville's novel...it attempts to tell the tale of how Melville got his inspiration for his epic. The fact that the recent remake of "Ben Hur" was a certified bomb casts no reflection on the popularity of the original which remains quite popular decades after it was made. This will be the first time the film classic, "Moby Dick" has been released domestically in high definition. I happen to believe it is a grossly underrated film and I understand Twilight Time has done quite a bit of work short of a full blown restoration to bring it to Blu-ray. Maybe I am dead wrong about its popularity, but I am not taking any chances. Let's see...Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy and directed by Ron Howard versus Gregory Peck, Richard Basehart, Orson Welles with a screenplay written by Ray Bradbury with John Huston and directed by John Huston.....

And here's a list of the Twilight Time films discs that have gone out-of-print and the corresponding dates as tracked by Jayembee over at Blu-ray.com. I'm not sure I would agree that only horror is a popular genre among its fastest-moving titles. It looks like many of the fantasy/action/adventure titles that went OOP quickly share many similarities with "Moby Dick."

But in defense of Ron Howards film, I don't use box office as a measure when this weekend's top grossing film was "Boo! A Madea Halloween" which made $27,600,000...more than "In the Heart of the Sea" made during its entire run. The dumbing-down of American cinema is apparent even to the legally blind. Plus I rarely go to the cineplexes any longer. People are downright discourteous and I am frankly sick of it... chatting, texting, eating, geting up and down, kicking the back of your chair and all around discourteous behavior. It's gone from bad to worse. I prefer watching from the comfort of my own living room—and I suspect there are many who have retreated to their homes as well. And it's a damn shame.

Hey, I'm no fan of their pricing, but this is one film I don't want lose to damage. I haven't compiled a favorites list, but I have no doubt "Moby Dick" would surely rank among my top 50 favorite motion pictures. I probably won't buy a back-up copy but this is one film for which it would make sense.

Because you asked for opinions if Moby Dick would sell out fast and I was trying to help. I referenced Ron Howard's movie because it deals with the subject matter and no one cared. Sorry I tried to help out. I think you should buy a hundred of them.

Perhaps I was a bit sharp in my retort but I have a lot of passion for this film ...geesh!

Good film to have a passion for, but this won't go out of print for a while. And all I need is one in this case.

If you're passionate, go ahead and pre-order it. It's only money, compared to potential disappointment.

If the film is that important to you, just buy it now and be done with it, but there is an approximately 0% chance this will sell out in pre-order.

There is some difference between going OOP "quickly" and going OOP during pre-order or on day one.

The TT and SAE sales are twice yearly, so unless a new release sells out on day one or within a couple of months of release, it's probably available in at least one of the sales.

If you remove all the titles that
a) took more than 1.5 years to sell out (some on that list took over 3 years, meaning they were likely available during multiple sales)
b) were re-issued and the re-issues took more than 4-6 months to sell out (meaning they likely could've been had at the discount price) or
c) the reissues are still in print (Big Heat, Thunderbolt, Rollerball, Alfredo Garcia, etc.), or
d) the titles were re-issued by the original studio, as with Christine, and you get:

Fright Night 2011 11 14 2011 12 20 (RE-ISSUED, below)
Night of the Living Dead 2012 09 14 2012 09 22
The Fury 2013 02 15 2013 08 30
Body Double 2013 07 24 2014 08 09 (RE-ISSUED, albeit on BD-R )
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger 2013 11 20 2014 03 04
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad 2013 11 20 2014 01 20
Wild at Heart 2014 03 19 2014 06 26
The Blob 2014 09 24 2014 10 23
Fright Night 2014 12 30 2015 01 01 [REISSUE]
John Carpenter's Vampires 2015 10 14 2016 10 06

Everything else was available in at least one or more of the SAE discount sales. (I vaguely recall The Fury being available during at least one sale, which would remove it from the list as well, but I left it in anyway)

As much as Moby Dick is a fantasy film, and an all-around classic in general, it just doesn't compare to the other films on the shortened "hot sellers" list in terms of the cult appeal that drove them to sell out so quickly. If it sells out in pre-order, then it will probably get a re-issue down the road, but I suspect that won't be unnecessary. But as others have noted, if anyone really wants it for fear it will sell out, they should buy it. I'm just not sure there's much of a choir to preach to this time around.

ADDENDUM: Just realized that a few of those OOP titles on Bluray.com's list actually turned up in the SAE's recent 7/$70 sales (Blue Lagoon, Splendored Thing, Song of Bernadette, High Time, Sleepless in Seattle), so while they may have been "officially" OOP, they definitely hadn't sold out at all sources.

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

Perhaps you are all correct. The reason I said I might grab two copies is because unlike other epic films of the period, it is not being issued in a manner that pretty much guarantees availability going forward. It's a film that I have longed to own in HD in its proper aspect ratio. It's a cryin' shame that MGM does not deem the film worthy of a full blown restoration. For me, "Moby Dick" represents an epic film in the tradition of "Gone With the Wind," "Ben-Hur," and "The Ten Commandments." It's a reminder of "bigger than life" actors and the ingenuity of early Hollywood productions before the advent of CGI. I also disagree with many of the critics of the time that felt Gregory Peck's performance was "affected." It made him other worldly like the whale, the two in a life and death battle for dominance. I think I will buy a copy in November and another copy farther down the road during a sale.

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

Screen Archives is having another signed copy promo, pick up $149.75 worth of titles and get At Close Range autographed by the director James Foley. No sales going on, but if you are like me and held off on picking up titles like Remo Williams, 9 to 5, Runaway Train, and Murphy's Law this could be the time to pick them up (I was waiting for this type of promo before pulling the trigger, and just hoped their would be no sell-outs, my patience paid off).

Re: The Official Twilight Time Blu-ray Thread

man am i glad i didn't bite on Runaway Train. what a garbage movie. i know Roberts can be erratic, but he took his Pope of Greenwich Village character, but this was amped up to the nth degree. he could not have been more grating. it's like he never took an acting lesson in his life. and that accent from Voight...ugh!! i don't know who he was channeling, but it was over the top and not in a fun way. glad i got this for like $4 on DVD as a two-fer with another remake of Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 but with Edward James Olmos!. think that was tv movie...

Screen Archives has 1984 for $24.95 amidst all of the hoopla as I like to call it going on. I suggested on Twilight Time's Facebook that the price should have been $19.84...they did say "Clever - we didn't think of that!" LOL, I'm sure nothing will come of it though.

Hey, this one's kinda of a big deal, right? (well, I think it is for me)

Unless I missed it, it never even got a proper DVD release State-side.
I'm surprised TT's putting it out and not Criterion, as they seem to have released other Carol Reed movies.

It was released in 2009 as part of Sony's strangely-curated "Martini Movies" collection along with maybe a half dozen other less-remembered gems. Most, including this one, are OOP and priced accordingly, but based on Twilight Time/SAE's recent history of sales of slow-selling titles for as low as $7.95 - $10.00, I'd consider holding off on picking it up for a while as it's unlikely to sell out.

Picked up Chato's Land for $14.99 plus shipping. I popped in my DVD of it last night and forgot it was not Anamorphic Widescreen. Then I immediately knew I must upgrade it and found it was on sale!! Whoo!!

I really appreciate TT selling some lesser-known Truffaut, it means a lot to me to be able to fill those in my collection. Just ordered Mississippi Mermaid and I now have all of TT's Truffaut releases... and I also grabbed 10 to Midnight, cuz c'mon.

It has been confirmed in the other forum, that the audio for the Cantonese language for TT Drunken Master is the incomplete one that is found on the DVD. I went ahead and ordered the Eureka UK version since is Region Free and includes the complete Cantonese Audio.

The TT still might be worth a purchase for Snake In The Eagle's Shadow as even if it does get released in the UK, it will have mandatory cuts due to animal cruelty.
