An American Werewolf in London 35th Anniversary - 09/27/16

Well, a Universal remaster? Count me as surprised.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release a brand new Blu-ray edition of director John Landis' film An American Werewolf in London(1981), starring David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, Griffin Dunne, John Woodvine, and Brian Glover. The release will be available for purchase on September 27.

Synopsis: Blending the macabre with a wicked sense of humor, director John Landis (National Lampoon's Animal House) delivers a contemporary take on the classic werewolf tale in this story of two American tourists who, while traveling in London, find their lives changed forever when a vicious wolf attacks them during a full moon. Starring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne and Jenny Agutter, An American Werewolf in London is newly restored and features groundbreaking, Academy Award winning make-up by Rick Baker (The Wolfman; Michael Jackson's Thriller Music Video).

Special Features and Specs:
  • NEW restoration of the film
  • Exclusive Sleeve
  • Beware the Moon
  • I Walked with a Werewolf
  • Making An American Werewolf in London
  • An Interview with John Landis
  • Makeup Artist Rick Baker on An American Werewolf in London
  • Casting of The Hand
  • Outtakes
  • Storyboards
  • Photograph Montage
  • Feature Audio Commentary with Cast Members David Naughton and Griffin Dunne

Color me surprised as well. I've got the steelbook though and not sure if its really worth it for me to upgrade. Guess I got time to think about it though, price point will be interesting.

Wow, looks like I may have to sell the 30th Anniversary disc to cover some of the costs for this one.

And very much needed in this case. The old disc has a lot of Edge Enhancement problems.

Damn. I just recently picked up the 30th BD. At least I got it cheap.

Will be curious to see the new transfer - wasn't thrilled with the current BD. Looks like all the special features are ported over from prior releases.

Yeah, I'll still keep the steelbook as I did with "Fifth Element." I just popped the previous disc into one of those thin, round plastic disc cases and it sits neatly inside the steelbook case. Again, I probably won't be rushing to buy this until I learn more. Unless the differences are a revelation, I'll wait till that sucker is $5 at Frys Electronics to pick it up. I'm even upset at myself for picking up the "Jaws" sequels and other recent Universal catalog titles that have been available for half price weeks after release. Hell, I got the remastered "Spartacus" and "Apollo 13" for $8 complete with slipcovers. Most of the time I don't get around to watching what I pick up for a month or two anyway. I'd rather buy titles I don't own first.

I've bought this too many times, but if the remaster is done right, sure, I'll bite.

For $10.

Like others, I'm approaching this release with caution. If the transfer is a marked improvement, I'll double dip when it's $10 or less.

After VHS, DVD (2 versions), HDDVD and Blu-ray Full Moon Edition I'm giving this a pass.

The HDDVD/Blu-ray transfer is grainy and gritty-looking but I think this particular film looks just fine that way.

Here's the new artwork:

I like the retro look to it.

And no sign Mondo garbage artwork in sight. Universal is doing it right. For once.

Re: An American Werewolf in London 35th Anniversary - 09/27/16

That is the best cover Universal has done for this title. That floating werewolf head on the DVD release was horrid and I was pleased when the Blu-ray was released with the original theatrical one-sheet. But when a competent artist is hired, I am on board. This is a nicely rendered cover. Mondo is hit or miss for me. Although I did not purchase the Target exclusive steelbook for "The Thing," I thought it was pretty damn cool. But that Mondo-like cover for the remastered "Wrath of Khan" is awful.

If the restoration looks good, I'll definitely upgrade as I only have this film on DVD.
