Well, there's also the special features to think of, unless you don't watch those or already have them from the DVD releases.

If you don't wait for sales, sure.

I paid $20 for the theatrical and $35 for the extended, so $55 for the whole thing isn't too bad.

Saw all the bonus features when I bought the DVD sets (which will be getting donated very shortly), don't have any particular desire to watch them again. I am interested in those fly-on-the-wall documentaries from Costa Botes, as I've never seen those before, but I get the feeling that'll be a one-time viewing for me as well.

Even waiting for sales, buying the films in the configuration I want would be significantly cheaper than buying both sets, unless they plan on charging some ungodly price for the individual extended editions.

The Mouth of Sauron is creepy and cool looking in the extended version.

And some people will be contrarian just for the sake of being contrarian.

I remember when the Fellowship of the Ring came out and there were a few people who claimed that the Ralph Bakshi animated Lord of the Rings was superior to Peter Jackson's effort.

So, I just bought the set today. The digital copies expire today, and I have no use for them. Here's the codes for whoever wants them:
Spoiler:

Cheers.

Yep, I bumped this thread on 6/18 mentioning it, and thought about mentioning it again now that we have this new activity. Now I don't have to.

Typo for FOTR, sorry. It may be too late to activate but I sent you a PM with the correct code.

I was able to download all three before they expired last night. I haven't seen the films in ages so I'm really looking forward to revisiting them.

Many thanks for posting the codes!

Re: Lord of the Rings Extended Edition out in 2011

I've been watching this set this week, and tonight I made the unpleasant discovery that the first disc of Return of the King skips at around 5:52. Has anyone else experienced a problem with this disc?

Re: Lord of the Rings Extended Edition out in 2011

Well, I said I wouldn't upgrade my DVDs (any of them!) when I latched onto Blu-ray last month but I found the LOTR-EE set for $6 at a local pawn shop doing a Boxing Week sale. Ummm, yeah, I bit on that one.

Now to see what these babies look like in HD!

I have heard that the transfers in HD do expose the occasional dodgy CG shot here and there, and there is a minor color timing controversy on Fellowship
