Monsters vs Aliens 3D and the PS3 - question

Ok...I have the MvA 3D movie that I got with my Samsung TV/Glasses bundle. I waited until the PS3 could display 3D Blu-Ray today and the movie is NOT recognized by the PS3. Do I have a bad disc or is it just not compatible with the PS3? Seems odd that I get nothing when I put it in.

I have a 60GB original PS3 also.

It should at least be able to play the regular 2D version.

You tried another BD disc? Maybe your drive is fried?

Re: Monsters vs Aliens 3D and the PS3 - question

Nope, apparently this is an issue with some PS3's and MvA after googling it. I have the latest 3.50 update and my PS3 is an original 60GB FAT one.

I tried other BD and it worked fine. Games work fine also. I also put my PS3 video settings to Automatic and it showed 3D in the options.

The XMB does not even recoginize the disc.

I did try the disc in my C6900 and it worked, but I don't have that hooked up to my 3D TV, so it does me no good. I figured my PS3 would handle my 3D movie watching.

Either it is a bad disc or a bad Sony firmware. Although, some people got it to work on the PS3. Maybe this will give me incentive to use my Sony Reward points to get a slim.

Slightly off topic, but If I buy the 3D versions of blu discs, will I be able to play the 2D version fine on a non 3D compatable TV?

Re: Monsters vs Aliens 3D and the PS3 - question

A few months back at work I tried out MvA3D on the PS3 in 2D and the disc played fine - however that was on a slim that hasn't been updated for months.

Re: Monsters vs Aliens 3D and the PS3 - question

It's weird....after reading other forums it appears to be split. Some people got it to work on a FAT PS3, others not. Also, some people had it working on slim, and others not. So, not sure if it is a firmware/PS3 hardware issue or a disc issue. Although, the disc played in my Samsung C6900. I can try it on my Blu-Ray reader on my PC to see if it picks it up.

Weird.

Count me as one of the ones that sees what you are seeing. Put MvA Samsung promo disc in the "fat" PS3 (60 GB) and it does not even register on the XMB. Same behavior before and after the 3.5 update. Other 3D discs play fine (in 3D mode).

Not necessarily. There is an *option* in the Blu-ray 3D spec to master a title for compatibility with 2D Blu-ray players and so far, all of the titles have been mastered that way, but it is not a requirement for the studio to do so.

Keep in mind that all 3D TVs lose a huge chunk of brightness when in 3D mode. This is caused by two things: the picture being split between left eye/right eye images with a fairly lengthy black blanking interval between each frame, and also through the tint and polarized filter in the glasses (passive or active). Blu-ray 3D titles are being mastered to look correct (brightness, contrast, colors, etc.) when in 3D mode. If you just switch over to the 2D portion of that Blu-ray 3D disc (which is actually the left eye portion of the 3D master), then its brightness, contrast and color settings are not going to be accurate.

I'll bet that when Cameron does "his" version of the Blu-ray 3D of "Avatar" it will be 3D only on the Blu-ray 3D Disc, and if they're being generous, then it will come with a separate standard 2D Blu-ray Disc.

Re: Monsters vs Aliens 3D and the PS3 - question

I believe someone has traced it down to ALL discs that were supplied with an early version of the Starter Kit will not play in the PS3. Basically, the 3D glasses have a BLACK bag. The newer version, the 3D glasses have a Blue Bag and the MvA plays fine......

So, maybe Samsung will replace the disc, but I doubt it.

Yes, this is true and I personally can vouch for this. I sent my original starter kit back to amazon and they replaced it with the newer one as described above. The disc in that kit plays fine on the PS3.

Weird. I'll have to check that out. The first MvA disc I got from a Samsung press event launching their 3D TVs, so that was as early as it gets. But I tested a second disc, which was in the starter kit that Samsung sent us along with the C8000 plasma TV and I just got that from them about a month ago. It's possible that the Samsung QA guys in California (the ones who send out the review samples) may be sitting on older starter kits. I'll check out what color the bags are...

Thanks for the tip.

I wonder if Buydig.com would swap it out for me....that is where I got mine. I doubt it since it is opened and used.
