I would think Star Trek Beyond would outsell Magic Mike XXL.

I mean as a set of three titles versus another set of three titles. I probably should've just stuck with two.

The three 2015 titles I listed grossed $881.5 million theatrically in the U.S.
The three 2016 titles I listed grossed $264.7 million theatrically in the U.S.

What started out as a rosy year, bucking the downward trend, has turned into a bloodbath.

There hasn't been any slowdown of releases, so the downward trend doesn't really signify anything at this point.

At this point it looks like the physical media market has become heavily title-driven, with some genres like superhero movies and animated family blockbusters carrying the load. Everything else is seeing steep declines.

Normal drama and comedies are quickly becoming VOD fodder.

Wonder how many drama and comedy titles are going the dvd-only route.

Wow, Black Friday barely made a dent in BD sales.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

This was the first Black Friday I didn't buy ANYTHING at Walmart- the cheapest BDs they had this year were $5.99, which was a bit much considering in 2010 they had a bunch for $5 each and I think even cheaper in the following years. Just didn't see anything worth their asking price, on Black Friday I truly expect to get something for nothing

There just weren't a whole lot of terrific deals as in years past. Most of my money went to Screen Archive Entertainment for the Twilight Time sale. Diehard collectors have amassed large libraries and the new generation of movie fans are more likely to go digital. I think retailers are just putting their emphasis where real profits can be generated. Other than the occasional re-release or steelbooks, my spending next year will be a fraction of 2015-2016. I was furiously buying up movies used and new to fill my collection before many titles went OOP. It was a smart move because much of what I acquired for pennies is rapidly becoming out-of-reach for my wallet. However, there comes a point that less is more. I don't intend on giving up an entire room to store my collection. At this point, I will likely part with titles as I add new ones.

I bought very little this year as well (at least compared to BF sales in years past). I got a few UHDs from Best Buy and a few TT BDs from their last sale (I think about 10 total from both sales). Each year my enthusiasm gets less for the sales as my unwatched pile gets bigger and bigger.

That's a really low bar for 'Post of the Week'. It's also several weeks old.

Maybe I'm missing something, but can you explain why? Isn't it comparing Black Friday 2016 with Black Friday 2015? Is there a reason why this Black Friday should've soared so significantly above the previous one? The week with Black Friday 2016 did more than double the previous week this year ($106.55 million vs. $50.91 million).

Shit, I just realized last year's was also roughly 5%. Man, for some reason these last two years have been flat. When was the last good year then? Chalk it up to me not keeping track and just thinking 5% is low-ish.

Yeah...but I only read it this week, Adam. These threads can sit without posts for days! That alone indicates the low level of interest and the humor in that post.

I officially rename it "The best post I read this week!"

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

It may be more apparent next year but I think Blu-ray will find itself in a "no-man's-land" as more collector-minded buyers may hold-off and wait for 4K Blu-ray to mature and others will, if not already, just go the streaming route.
