But, the Total Sales of Blu-Ray increase (depending on the week and "Big Action") 20-50%. This past week (July 9th) the Blu-Ray total increase was 22.9%. If you look at June 4th's totals, it is an increase of 39.1% for the BR Titles.

True, the percentage compared to DVD/Blu-Ray Total only increased by 10%.

That's with double the catalog releases, 10+ million more BD players in homes etc.

That's the thing, DVD sales are getting hammered - yet still account for roughly 80% of disc sales every week. And with total disc sales (DVD and BD) continuing to drop YOY, it's apparent BD is doing nothing to pick up the slack left by DVDs major decline.

Not sales, rental copies.
If the copies sold to rental outlets like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video are included in these numbers, then they probably made a fairly significant chunk of the sales figures in the past.

Just the fact that video stores in general have shut down all across the country would surely put a big dent in the DVD and Blu-ray sales.
The plunge in physical media sales (DVD and Blu-ray combined) isn't just a blip in the market that will recover one day. Week to week it may go up and down marginally but in the big picture it will go nowhere but down.

The major rental chains such as Blockbuster would buy 50-60 copies of any big new release.

DVD sales are taking an even bigger hit over the past few months with no bottom in site.
BR is selling better on new big action movies and some old catalog titles (Harry Potter, LotR set, Spiderman Trilogy when it was on $19.99 sale, Back to the Future on sale at Target for $14.99...).
New Movies:
Action - 24% to 50% BR
Animated - 24% to 50% BR
Everything else - 11% to 37% BR
Two numbers to look at:
Total $Dollar$ Revenue for BR compared to DVD - BR is running well above the 20% for the year 2011
Total number of Disks sold - BR is running only in the 10% range
-DVD is selling a TON of $3.99 to $7.99 movies
-BR has some great deals out there, but not at the prices of DVD

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder
Warner & Lion's Gate seem to be the most aggessive, price-wise. Titles like True Romance, Eraser, Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, Collateral Damage, Superman, Troy, The Fugitive from Warner are $4.99 at Best Buy and T2/Total Recall, Rambo/First Blood, Johnny Handsome/Angel Heart, House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Rejects have all been priced at $9.99 for the two packs.
The price is right for a lot of titles but so far the inclination on the part of the consumer to buy more physical media just isn't there like it was with DVD.

There's no getting around the steep decline for DVDsfrom Deadline.com)
Report: Plummeting Disc Sales Depress Home Video Business in 1H 2011.
At this time last year disc sales were off 7.1% vs. 2009. DVDs are the culprit: Although DEG only reports figures for "packaged goods," it notes that Blu-ray sales are up more than 10%.

There's no way DVD revenue can keep pace with Blu-ray. Most of the DVD sales are the bargain titles. Release day disc sales are down overall and the DVD price drops are faster and more pronounced than Blu

Starz is getting $200-300 Million from Netflix and other studios are (some now and ton more in the future) pulling in a chunk of change from the VOD business.
All these are hitting now and when factored into the equation, Hollywood is doing pretty well.
True DVD dollars are way down and continue to go down.
But, with BR up and VOD up, the movie/entertainment industry is doing pretty well through this recession.
DVD Side note:
I am still watching to see if this will be the 1st year in a long time (10 years?) where a DVD will not pass the $100 million mark in a calendar year? Tangled has the best shot, it only needs $6 million over the next 5 months.
I am sure all the big action movies that come out in the Nov/Dec time slot will sell a ton of BR, but I do not think they will surpass DVD $100 million like the movies have done in the past Holiday Seasons.
Just another negative milestone DVD will pass on it's way to resting place and being replaced full time by BR.

Better yet go to your boss tomorrow and tell him you want to phase out a product line that brings 90 million in revenue in each month. Then tell him you are going to replace it with something about only a third of the population have and it will take years and possibly never make up the revenue that the other product line had. See what his response will be.
