Blu-ray and DVD sales - We're number 2, but we try harder

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder
Seem like the only thing selling these days are the packages and not the content.
Only $5 for the Blu-ray but if its got that rare slipcover or limited edition steelbook then it'll fetch $95 easily.

If record store and video store culture were still around, I might have an actual social life and not spend so much time here .

I've been noticing a lot of dump bin $5 (or less) bluray movies I've been purchasing recently, the digital codes have already expired.

Back in the day, I use to hang out at various record stores which specialized in less popular punk rock and metal genre type records (and later cds).
These days, such specialized record stores seem to be a rarity now.
(I never hung out at video stores).

Where else can you rent/buy movies for next to nothing? The only thing that is comparable is netflix, which doesn't come close (selection wise). And maybe redbox for the handful of new releases worth watching.
It might be a different story, if they start doing online rentals for $1.00, but I wouldn't count on it. Never underestimate the greed and stupidity of the studios to overprice and fuck everything up.
Redbox was making a profit with $1.00 rentals (physically distributed) and the studios are charging $2.99 to $4.99 for digital rentals?
Just when I think movies/music studios are run by total jerk offs, they back me up and prove I'm 100% correct.

Redbox raised their prices a few cents a year or so ago. I never paid for a rental from them anyways, I only used them back when they were giving out free rental codes every week.

At $2.99 to $4.99 for digital rentals I'm sure the studios are missing out on the real potential of "digital". Everything's normal.

Frozen is just one of those crazy viral events where every parent of a young daughter bought it, and then bought it again for good measure.

Hey, whatever movies units. I got my copy of Frozen yesterday, so someone is still buying it . Nice that Disney have a system which finally works with Vudu, anyway.

I bought it again to have on VUDU (the DVD "sing-a-long" version), since the UK 3D version doesn't have a DC code. I remember Frozen week having over $100 million on Blu-ray, but I think it's more impressive how sales have continued after that first week. I believe it was in the top 10 pretty much every week last year after it came out.

^ Another stellar performance. At what point does the format enter 'critical condition' and get put on life support?

$76.22 million is still nothing to sneeze at- that's the problem with most businesses, a million bucks isn't enough when they're used to getting a billion. I'd still be happy to be getting that much!

Revenue != profit. Obviously they're making enough money to keep producing this stuff, though.

It's really amazing that we are getting so many niche (some might say obscure) titles. Granted, these are mostly from boutique labels, but it must make economic sense to still put out some titles that sell fewer than 3,000 copies.

The problem though, at least for me, is if the only way to collect titles in the future is by $30 a pop boutique label releases, the hobby becomes less feasible and the cost/quality ratio with streaming looks better and better...

It would be nice if they could add EST sales to that chart. Then the arrows wouldn't be all red most the time. But probably not feasible at this point, since they probably already would have done it (I asked Tom Arnold a year ago and he said it couldn't be done yet).

What we are seeing is movies from the bottom being released while middle tier movies are being ignored (except from those by the MGM-owned properties, which TT, Kino Lorber and Olive are releasing at a prodigious rate). And Warner is sitting on probably the majority of them.

Never gave this much thought before now, but what is the "revenue" for? Is it calculated by MSRP or wholesale sales? If it is MSRP, then the real sales are actually lower than these figures; if it's wholesale then the actual revenue will probably be a bit higher (barring too many loss leaders). I suppose it could also be actual cost to the consumer, but I doubt anyone tracks that.

It's actual revenue, not MSRP. If you click on the chart on the home page, you'll see more data, showing actual units sold and the corresponding average disc price paid. For this the latest week, the average price paid for a Blu-ray was $17.06

Yeah, that's for the week. For the year it's less than 20%. Units sold are really a better indicator of consumer preference , so less than 20% Blu-ray after 9 years is rather pathetic (although some individual popular titles can get over 50%, overall it's less than 20%).
