Does anyone else remember MGM releasing Blu-ray/DVD combos in a DVD-sized case? I don't think those lasted too long.
HD DVD combos sucked ass. Good idea maybe, but terrible execution. They would have been better off putting a separate DVD in the box. Instead they put out glitchy discs which forced people to try and obtain the movie on Blu-ray or an HD DVD import to avoid that nonsense. Shot themselves in the foot on that one.

I also remember the MGM dual releases in the DVD keep case. So ugly. The weird thing was I think they offered both cases types for each title like that early on. Thankfully I never had to buy one for any of the movies I wanted.

I guess making them double-sided discs cut down on production costs as compared to two separate discs. A single disc case is a few cents cheaper than a double case etc.

The D/S discs also closed any opportunity for buyers to give away, re-sell or rent the DVD in the secondary market and video stores.

Has there been info that indicates this has been a major problem for Blu-ray's with a separate DVD?

There probably isn't good data for third-party sales, but I'm sure corporate types would assume that re-selling was a problem, and double-sided discs were a way around that.

I bought a two-sided BD-DVD combo a couple years ago that I had trouble playing in one player, but I think it was OK since then.

I'm glad those died off too. Was that Universal again trying that shit?

That one was Warner.

In the earlier days when rentals were still popular I imagine this would be a concern because a video rental outlet could buy the combo and rent both a DVD and Blu-ray for much less than having to purchase a separate DVD and a separate Blu-ray.

It's probably not so much of an issue now with the lack of rental store sales.

You'll also notice on many of the DVDs within a Blu-ray/DVD combo have a very clear "NOT FOR SALE OR RENTAL" tag printed on the label.

I've actually had far fewer problems with Warner's HD combo discs than with their single-sided ones- they were made by the same manufacturer. I've lost count of how many single-sided discs have gone bad so far, but only had 2 combo discs mess up. Of course I should probably check them again as more have gone bad since then.

I was able to pick up quite a few of those MGM Blu-ray DVD combos in the DVD case for 99-cents at B.J.'s a few years ago (with an in-store coupon, I recall). Among the ones I still have are The Graduate, Roadhouse, Hoosiers, The Terminator, and a few others.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

Some of the Disney combo packs came in DVD sized packaging. I believe they were Disney Movie Rewards exclusives. I know I happened across a used copy of The Fox and The Hound 2 pack, and it's got a Bluray plus two DVDs in DVD sized packaging.

Also, my copy of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is DVD sized but is a Blu/DVD combo.

I don't know of any people personally splitting out combo discs like this, but I occasionally find used copies where one of the discs is missing like someone kept the Blu and traded in the rest of the set (which is weird, but there it is).

Yeah, I scored a cheap Beauty and the Beast blu/DVD in DVD packaging a while back. Still a very nice set.

Not sure if I'd double dip if they re-release it next year. But it's one of my favorites.

Nope. Those got wide distribution. I intentionally purchased some of those because they fit with the rest of the DVD collection better. I got most from Amazon and a few from Walmart. I know they were sold at Kmart too but they charged more so I didn't bother with them.

Those DVD-case sets were given away in Disney Rewards because so many of them came back unsold! Though I would've picked the bigger case for Fox and the Hound if I'd known the Blu case had stupid stacked discs.

WB had some nice blu-ray cases (not like those awful spider cases) around 2007-2008, e.g. 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut. Those titles came with the VC-1 video codec and PCM audio.

Did the Stanley Kubrick Set have them in DTS-HD and Mpeg2 or they were the same discs?

I know that's the reason they were released in two different packages, so it's nice to know someone actually was happy to get that!

I was happy with mine because they were used and cheap.

Same for a couple of the ones I purchased. I distinctly recall they were *far* less expensive than the *same* sets in the BD packaging. I was quite happy to take the extra discount for the different packaging.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

After all these years..."SW The Force Awakens" became ONLY the 5th title (Non Box Set) to pass the $100 million mark in BR.

Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens 4,136,659 $103,223,285 (4 weeks)

The Next BR above SW TFA is "The Avengers"...it took 8 or 9 weeks to get to the same point SW TFA is at:

The Avengers 4,205,619 $93,162,753 (9 weeks)

Only 5 after 10 years or so...not sure when the 6th will be, nothing on the horizon that I can see.
***Though, I think "The Dark Knight" would be really close if we had all the sales stats for the first 8 months or so***
-I know the first week set BR records back in the day

Why are stats not available for this title?

Do we know how many DVD titles passed the 100m mark for a comparison?

Some like Frozen past $100 million their first year, most of the other took more than a year to pass the $100 million mark.

2014 - Frozen $213,525,063
2013 - Despicable Me 2 $128,845,080
2012 - The Hunger Games $152,507,775
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1
- Brave $127,660,004
- The Avengers $112,366,638
-
2011 - Tangled $158,951,133
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II $101,586,260
- Cars 2 $101,417,136
2010 - At least 8 titles went over the $100 million mark that came out in 2010
(I would say 2010 was the last true big year for DVD)
