Could Mad Max have factored in? It's a catalog title, and a re-release at that, but it was released in connection with the new movie.

Maybe. It's the most widely available Scream Factory release in a very long time (maybe ever), but I'd be surprised if it factored in significantly.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was all Fifty Shades responsible for that bump

You're right, it probably was Fifty Shades.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

Not surprising Blu-ray was up quite a bit, since after all nothing was released in last year's comparison week (nor the week before that, so no carryover).

What is surprising though is the difference between the DVD and Blu-ray YoY. Normally they have been fairly close. Blu-ray usually wins by a small margin, and rarely wins big. And when Blu-ray loses, it usually loses substantially to DVD, and most often in the larger weeks (hence why Blu-ray is down more than DVD this year...at least the last I checked, this week could have changed that).

The funny thing is that the mom tossing Fifty Shades into her Target shopping cart is not really the demographic you think of for BD.

It makes a difference when the BD also includes a DVD. Fifty Shades is a romance drama and still got a 57% BD share. If that were a Fox or Sony release, where they don't include the DVD any longer, then that share would have been about 47% or so. So bottom line is that more moms throw in the BD these days, but only if it includes the DVD. Anyway, it could also be that the DVD was bare bones and they wanted to get the version which has more extras (since they are buying it mostly for themselves), I don't know. A little unusual regardless.

Combo makes sense, and maybe that was the one displayed near checkout.

re: Blu-ray and DVD sales - #2, but we try harder

So here is the real question. Which format lasts longer as a viable retail format, DVD or Blu-ray? In about 18 months, Blu-ray consumers will soon be faced with the Ultra HD format as a direct competitor. I doubt any of the DVD consumers will jump directly from DVD to Ultra HD.

^ That is a good question. It's tough to imagine all three formats sitting side-by-side on shelves. It will also be interesting to see how they will package the three formats. Individually? Ultra HD with DVD? Ultra with Blu-ray? All three in one?

I doubt many BD customers will jump on Ultra HD either. New player and new TV are required - it gets to the point of 1080p being more than good enough.

As small as the BD fraction of disc sales are (what is it, 30% on average?), expect Ultra HD to be a small subset of the BD slice of the pie.

What's the size where 4k is noticiblely different from 1080p? I'm guessing it's 60"-65" and up. Which most people do not buy. So I don't see the majority of the blu ray crowd moving up.

As for me, I'm about to replace a 40", 55", and 70". Now I need to ponder whether to buy now or wait for the full 4k spec TV's to come out.

Wouldn't you need a REALLY huge TV to see the difference between 1080p and Ultra HD anyways, like close to 80", and also need to be sitting close? My 50" TV is plenty big enough for my living room.

No. Size, distance, and the quality of the source material are all factors, but it's nothing nearly that outlandish.

The biggest stumbling block for evaluating content at the moment is that most of it's not great, quality-wise. The response to 4K streaming has generally been lackluster, and at least some of the 4K-movies-on-a-hard-drive that come with TV purchases aren't encoded well.

Well I've seen 4k content running on a 70" screen and I had a hart time seeing the improvement. So maybe 80" is the minimum - and something that size isn't that common in people's living rooms.

Even on a big screen, in most cases you won't see much of a difference at all. Only on scenes with lots of small detail will you notice a appreciable diff.

I think the quality of the content is going to the biggest drawback to 4K.

Unless something is filmed in 4K HD, it's probably not going to look appreciably better than 1080p. I notice a wide range in the quality of my blu-ray discs which comes down to the source material, be it film stock, lighting conditions, or whatever.

That's why I want to see the new Crouching Tiger movie on Netflix since it's apparently filmed in native 4k. One odd detail I noticed though, is that they have the color listed as black and white. Guess we'll find out in August.

I'm not sure that 4k on Netflix would be a good representation. 4k streamed will probably be highly compressed, lessening any impact the quality could have had. The best way to judge is with a local file - either on a harddrive or from UltraHD BD.

I've seen 4k on a 60" at Best Buy and it was breathtaking! Just about as noticeable as the first time I saw HD in 2001.

Maybe the source you were viewing wasn't the best?

4K on Netflix is actually pretty good if you have the bandwidth to support it. The Blacklist and House of Cards look amazing.

You're right, I'd say that 4K Netflix is roughly equal to 2K Blu-ray. The extra compression cancels out most of the benefit of higher resolution. But still, having streaming quality on par with Blu-ray is pretty amazing and something I didn't think I'd see this soon.

Sounds like everyone has already seen 4k streaming from Netflix! Awesome!

Have there been any reviews on the 4k quality yet? I haven't checked.

Goblin23, so I assume you have a 4k TV? How are you porting to see the 4k stream? I'm hunting for a 4k, so I'm checking to see how people are doing this. I already have gigabit service, so bandwidth won't be an issue.
