re: Star Wars
Kids are kids, and what they like now won't necessarily be what they like when they are older. As they get older, they will understand the quality of good films, and forget about the stupid things that made them love them as a kid. I look back now at Rocky IV and the movie is laughable these days, but as a kid I probably watched a zillion times on HBO, and thought the Original Rocky was 'too slow.'

While I previously "didn't care" about the changes (well except Han not shooting first), this completely changes everything.
I'm sold on watching the movie in it's original form (as much as we can get it in it's original form).
Just the skin tones alone and the lack of color saturation has me sold on the original version. This makes me feel like a kid aagin watching this "despecialized" edition. This is how I remembered it.

Check out http://www.starwarslegacy.com. You'll have to register in order to see anything, and on first glance the site will seem kind of abandoned, but there's some stuff buried in there that will blow your mind. The guy behind this prefers discussion to be kept within the confines of his site, so I won't say any more.

Exactly why I've never believed a word out of Lucas' mouth when it came to restoring the OT. He's full of shit. It can be done if one has the desire and/or resources to do it.

Believe it or not, you're not too far off the mark there.

It's kind of sad that fans take this much more interest than the creative parties who were originally involved with the films. Though it's amazing that technology has reached a point where they can be.

re: Star Wars
There's a big difference between the creative people who worked on the films and the corporations that own/control them. That said, Star Wars is a totally unique situation. The only similar situation I can think of is that of the Orson Welles estate. Even still, we have no reason to believe Disney doesn't care.

Like I said, it will seem abandoned at first, but there's good info in there. Find the screencast area. There's a bunch of cool restoration demos and even better, a link to the live show which has some very cool insight into the current state of Star Wars (and it's recent history) and Lucasfilm. Very inside baseball in a lot of ways, but intersting if you're into that sort of thing.

So...this:

What's this site's reputation? All the Star Wars pages I follow on FB are reposting, but that might just be wishful thinking on their part.

I will believe the UOT is being released when George Lucas delivers it to my door personally and then apologizes for the special editions.

Have no fear in showing your kid something now, because his tastes will change when he gets older. When I was growing up I liked Rocky IV more then Rocky, I liked Return of the Jedi more then Empire Strikes Back, and Superman II more then Superman I. As I got older and rewatched the films again as an adult, I did a 180 on all of these films (and many others too).
Kids are kids, and what they like now won't necessarily be what they like when they are older. That'd be cool. To finally have these films again. I've never seen them fully, the unaltered ones.
I do wonder though how some people would react to them with their little flaws. Things that the altered fixed up at times.
Fuck. It'll probably weird me out for a bit. But film preservation is so important to me they it'll be a joy to see then unaltered. If that happened.

The only error in the OT that ever kinda bothered me was the arm of the Wampa. But I will take the error being there in a BD release if it means Hayden Christensen is kept in the PT where he belongs, only Han shoots and Jedi Rocks is less offensive.
