Don't expect a big budget action/special effects type thing. This is a low budget drive-in fare. More horror than sci-fi. More in common with late 70s stuff than 80s.

Spoiler:
Alien big game hunter comes to Earth to hunt humans. Has alien hunting weapons. Chooses a rural backwoods area for hunting grounds. Picks off hunters, campers, fishermen. Hangs his kills/trophies in shack in woods. Jack Palance is big game hunter who goes after the alien. Hunter vs hunter. Mono a mono(Palance actually speaks that). Climax similar to Predator.

Yeah I sort of figured that with it being a Scream Factory title, since a lot of their stuff isn't mainstream titles or big budgeted stuff. To be honest though with horror a lot of times that's what appeals to me is the lower budget simplistic styles. Particularly from the mid seventies through the eighties and some of the early nineties.

Does Shout Factory charge you immediately for pre-orders or until they ship?

True, but at $160 a pop, I'm surprised they all went that fast. I wouldn't be shocked if some guy figured out a way to book 25 and plans to put 24 of them on Ebay.

I wonder if they'll be released individually or just in the box set. I'm probably in the minority but I like having individual art work for each different movie.

Did they pick up the rights to the Herzog stuff from Anchor Bay? I wonder if they have the early Verhoeven stuff too?

That would be fucking epic as some of the early Verhoeven stuff has only been released overseas to less than stellar reviews.

I've been watching eBay for the old Anchor Bay collection, but don't see it often and when I do, it's pricey. They all had commentaries with him too. And my local library network only has a couple of them, so some are in the wind and difficult to see.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

For the sake of people like me who can play other region discs, it should be noted that another Herzog box set (which also includes Burden of Dreams) in being released by BFI in the UK, I believe on the same day as the US set. From the blu-ray.com forums, here are the differences:

Only in the Shout! Factory set:
Even Dwarfs Started Small
Ballad of the Little Soldier
Where the Green Ants Dream
Lessons of Darkness
Little Dieter Needs to Fly
My Best Fiend

Only in the BFI:
The Unprecedented Defence of the Fortress Deutschkreuz
Last Words
Precautions Against Fanatics
Handicapped Future
The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner
How Much Wood Would a Woodchuck Chuck
Huie's Sermon
God's Angry Man

The BFI set will run you about $85 shipped to the US, and has different bonus features than Shout's (but I think they have the same commentaries?). But it should also be noted that the 18 films on the BFI box will be spread out among 7 discs (though some of these listed films are not feature-length). Decisions, decisions...

The closer I look at the list of discs, the more I hope for separate releases as well. I'd really only want the Kinski films, plus Kasper Hauser, Heart of Glass, and Stroszek. Although if they sold them for $20 a pop, that's already more than the price of this set on Amazon. I'll hold onto my pre-order for now I suppose.

No love for Little Dieter Needs to Fly? That's one of my favorites.

I'm conflicted on these two sets. The only two on the BFI set I'd really miss are The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner and God's Angry Man, and I have all of these on dvd, but odds are a lot of those shorts won't be released on blu anywhere else. I really wish that Shout box was a bit more comprehensive.

I like or love all of the films in the set (except for Even Dwarfs Started Small), but that doesn't mean I feel the need to own or rewatch all of them anytime soon.

Same here, so in the end last night I decided to purchase the BFI set for a number of reasons:

- It was half the cost of the Shout! set
- BFI has Burden of Dreams in HD, Shout! does not
- Both sets contain the core Herzog films I want, though admittedly Shout's has some stuff I love (specifically Fiend and Dieter), but all the exclusives on Shout! I have on DVD from Anchor Bay's old box set, so I'll keep using those
- A lot of the exclusives on BFI's set are short films that I have not seen before, so I am mighty interested to check them out, and in hi-def no less!
- Shout's case design looks bulky and oversized....I hate, HATE gimmicky packaging like that, and much prefer BFI's design

Admittedly I'm a little leery of 18 films being spread out on 7 discs, but BFI usually does great work, so if the decision was to use only 7 discs, I'm sure it was one made with a lot of thought.

I know I'll end up with both sets. I have the two BFI steelbooks already pre-ordered.

I can't play other region Blu-rays and have no interest in getting an other-region player.

re: The One and Only Shout! Studios (and Scream Factory!) Blu-ray Thread

I had the BFI release pre-order think that the Shout! one would have everything and I canceled the UK release. I had locked in the lower price early on then when I found out that Shout's wouldn't have everything I went back to see how much it was and it was 58 GDB. I believe I had ordered it when it was 38 GDB.

I may have fucked up there….

Really? IMO, it's pretty worth it, especially for a big film fan, you can get all kinds of good stuff that's region-exclusive, I don't regret it. It's expensive, but worth it. I'm surprised that a big film buff like you isn't region-free, to be honest. But hey, to each his own.

Invest in a media server! It's what I do: buy discs from whatever region you want and then rip them to the server. Regions don't mean anything when it's all digital, and it offers lots of other pluses. A few pieces of hardware, some cables, a bit of software setup and and blammo, you're all set.

(For the record, I also own the Insignia NS-WBRDVD2 AKA the slowest goddamn multi-region Blu-Ray player in the world, and a sizable factor in me deciding on a media server.)

Completely off topic, but which player do you use? I'm looking for a region free blu ray player straight out of the box. I bought a modified Sony from some company located in Chicago (globalelectronics maybe?), and it didn't work. Got a refund.
