Criterion doesn't need to do a restoration. MoMA and The Film Foundation led a 4K digital restoration that Romero supervised. It was unveiled for the first time less than a year ago, so it should be fantastic.

Criterion has released other public domain films on Blu-ray, and AFAIK, those efforts haven't been duplicated by the usual suspects. I'm not aware of the European NotLD BDs having been cloned/re-distributed stateside either. Not saying it hasn't happened , but it definitely hasn't been what we saw in the VHS/DVD days.

I mean, I don't know what the rules are about all that, but I don't think it's a sticking point.

I thought somebody had copyrighted NOTLD and that is was no longer PD. Like what happened with It's A Wonderful Life.

Wow, I didn't think Shout could pull this off, but Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead is coming on 10/24. Just announced on Facebook, extras are TBA.

I've been itching to replace my ancient HD DVD (!), so Scream's special edition BD is welcomed news.

Does that Dawn of the Dead cover give any indication that it's the remake?

I saw that and started to get excited. I hope they're not trying to make people who aren't paying attention that they got the original.

Not as good as the original but I actually like some aspects of Snyder's remake. Another that I'll consider adding to my collection once the price is low enough. I've got the original release anyways so I'm not overly anxious to upgrade.

No it doesn't but here is the post from the facebook announcment.
Yesterday we announced George A Romero’s Land of the Dead and today we bring you even more zombie action in the form of Zack Snyder’s thrilling 2004 remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD!
Project is still in progress but here’s what we can tell you so far:
- The Blu-ray release will be branded as a "Collector's Edition" that will come with a slipcover (guaranteed for three months after its original release date.)
- The newly-commissioned front-facing artwork you see pictured comes to us from Nathaniel Marsh (Carrie, The John Carpenter steelbooks). The reverse side of the wrap will showcase the original theatrical poster art design.
- Bonus features & specs are still in progress and will be announced sometime in Sept but we can confirm today that this will be a 2-disc set and will sport new extras (including interviews with Ty Burrell, James Gunn, Jake Webber, David Anderson & Heather Langenkamp Anderson) plus the theatrical and unrated versions of the film.
- Official street date is 10/24/17. However, if you pre-order now directly from our website @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/…/land-...ector-s… you’ll get it two weeks earlier plus you’ll received a free 18” x 24” rolled poster of the newly-designed key art (while supplies last)!

Yeah agreed. It is a bit deceiving to people who aren't paying attention. I mean the image kind of looks more like the remake but at the same time it would be pretty easy to mistake for the original. Just seeing the image I wouldn't have realized right away that it was the remake without the little announcement blurb.

Why wouldn't they be able to "pull this off?"

It was a fairly popular movie, that it might not seem that Universal would license it out for Shout.

I had the same "oh, shit...!" reaction, thinking it was the original until I started reading the description.

Since Universal already put out a BD, maybe they're more willing to share.

I guess... Universal seems to give Shout plenty though. I would think them releasing all 3 cuts of the original film would be more of a task to pull off.

Three O'clock High is awesome and should be better known. It still holds up well and is extremely funny.

I have gone back and forth with almost buying the DVD forever but knew as soon as I did, they would announce a Blu-ray which held me back. Glad I waited but I wasn't going to be surprised if it never made it to BD.

I came thisclose a month or so back to buying a two-disc set of "Landof / Dawn of" at a low, low price, -I'm glad I held off. When I heard the LOTD announcement I remembered the set and thought "Wouldn't it be cool if they got Snyder's DOTD, too". That's great with me.

This is the wrong thread for this but the Japan Happinet edition of NOTLD is pretty great as is. It's the same print used on Elite's Millennium Edition I believe.

Other companies wouldn't be able to use their restoration. You can make changes to public domain material, like a new print for a film or putting sunglasses on Santa Claus and then that alteration is yours. Someone else could do their own restoration, but anything Criterion (or someone else) put into it would be theirs.

The key being Criterion reportedly would be adding newly found footage in addition to the cleanup efforts.

As long as it is "found footage", not "recently filmed" ala the 30th AN. DVD.

Dawn of the Dead is the only Zack Snyder film that I've liked and I liked it quite a bit, so I may pick up this release.

it looks like the remake to me. flashlights, shotgun (Rhames figure-like holding it), Crossroads Mall...
