Hmm. I was hoping they were going to be "lazy", make it a four-disc set and just repurpose the DVD pressings of Disc 3 from the Oldboy tin. Here's hoping quality won't be sacrificed.

I'm hoping the number of discs is a mistake. I think squeezing both versions of Lady Vengeance on one disc could be a bad thing.

I can't imagine how you could seamlessly branch an entire film slowly fading to black and white. More likely they'd have to have two completely separate video tracks on the disc. They could share audio tracks, but I don't think they would be able to share video.

I own both the Oldboy DVD tin set and the BD release. Awesome deal since I can pay for this new set just by selling those two releases. I also have Sympathy and Lady Vengeance on DVD that I can sell too.

It has been quite some time since I've watched this, but isn't it just one (relatively short) sequence that fades to black and white? I don't recall it being a change to the entire film.

In conjunction with the camera technique of removing the colours, there is also a change in the environmental colours used in backgrounds and clothing. At the beginning of the film, the environments contain a lot of primary colours, whereas toward the end of the film pastel shades, blacks and whites are used. Geum-ja wears a blue coat in the early part of the film, but this is replaced with a black leather coat at the end. The brightly coloured walls of the prison and Geum-ja's bedroom are replaced with the grey walls of the school.
Both versions of the film were shown in Korean cinemas, although the fading version was presented only in digital format at a few DLP-equipped multiplexes. The film ends with the narrator saying, "Farewell..." followed by Jenny's line: "Miss Geum-ja."

Well, what do you think the "angle" button is for? I think it makes sense.

Using either VC-1 or AVC codecs, it's entirely possible to put two versions of the disc and not suffer major compression (especially VC-1). It may be easier for the production house to do it that way instead of trying to sync both video tracks with the audio.

Ok so we're talking nearly 4 hours of 1080p video, multiple audio tracks, and all the special features. You really think that's appropriate for one BD?

I get that, that's what I told my cousin. I barely see it mentioned anywhere else though on other sites or on DVD tracking sites, and that sort of stuff also. For this to be such a high profile release, and it is to me in a big way, there just doesn't seem to be much talk about it so far.

Most of the extras, if not all, will probably be SD based and we're now shy of 50GB right there.
The Canadian Haloween triple-pack fits four and a half hour worth of film on a BD-50 (one film is 1080p, the other two are 1080i); all with DTS-HD MA tracks. All look great and highly superior to their DVD counterparts.

Does that mean that after June, this will show up in Canada as well? I would love to upgrade, as I have the DVD versions of all three films, but have been turned off by the $40-$50 Cdn price HMV has been asking for a couple of years for the Oldboy BD import.
