re: Troma on Blu-ray

Full Moon's films distributed by 88 films are region free. I wonder if it's the same with Troma's movies.

Graduation Day will be getting a Blu-ray release from Vinegar Syndrome on September 4th here in the states with a supposed 4K restoration.

Anyone gotten a copy of Toxic Avenger yet?

I am very curious to hear about the transfer and the aspect ratio. i would like to dump my old DVD but I am afraid to until I hear some reviews.

Customers who ordered directly from Troma just started to have their copies ship out today. Ugh. I'd check Zia Records here in town to see if they have a copy in stock, but I won't have time to check until later in the week.

88 Films in the UK confirmed they took Troma's HD master (the same used for Troma's Blu-ray) and had it cleaned up alongside mastering the audio in lossless DTS-HD MA. That release is region free and comes out next week.

It's Troma. Be grateful you'll actually receive a physical disc in 10-12 days.

Here's what we know about the two releases from press releases and confirmation from the studios:

88 Films:
• Audio Commentary with Director Lloyd Kaufman
• Deleted Scenes
• The Radiation March Clip From The Cartoon Spin-Off Toxic Crusaders
• Toxie 15 Years Later Mockumentary
• The Death of Toxie Tromaville Café TV Sketch
• Troma Studio Building Tour
• Mopboy Secrets Featurettes (With Commentary by Mark Torgl)
• Advertisement from the Troma Website
• Aroma Du Troma Clip Montage
• Toxic Slide Show
• Theatrical Trailer
• Bonus Trailers For Bloodsucking Freaks , Graduation Day and The Last Horror Film

Troma Films:
• Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo
• New Introduction with Director Lloyd Kaufman
• Audio Commentary with Director Lloyd Kaufman
• New Audio Commentary with Cast Members
• New Interview with Jennifer Baptist
• Interviews with Cast and Crew
• Toxic Slide Show
• Theatrical Trailers
• 40 Years of Troma Video Montage

Some of the bonus materials from 88 Films' release are on practically every Troma DVD and/or Blu-ray release now, so it wouldn't be a complete loss if Troma's disc doesn't have them.

Either way, I really wish Troma would just hand their library over to a studio that would handle it with some care. Blue Underground, Shout, Synapse, whomever.

Got mine yesterday. Comes in a green case, with DVD and BLu-Ray. I spot checked a few scenes. Overall the image is the best I have seen it, though a few fast moving scenes were a little blurry. Is is widescreen also btw.

That's the wrong OAR, correct?

Its a coin toss at this point. Both ratios were released on DVD. Shot in Full, matted for wide. Here is an old thread:

I'm sure widescreen is not the 'wrong' aspect ratio for the film since it was released theatrically and Lloyd does know about aspect ratios. However Troma is largely cheap when it comes to mastering their films on home video. So they mostly used open matte transfers up until recently(and their Toxic Avenger laserdisc in the past).

I assume Toxic Avenger looks fine in matted widescreen based on Class of Nuke Em High' widescreen framing, which was also theatrically released back then. However Troma is inconsistent on blu-ray since Tromeo and Juliet despite having a theatrical release was only issued in 1.33:1 which is strange. Of course seeing that in that form if their is no extra information on the sides, it'd be a pretty cramped transfer matted to widescreen in my opinion. Though it'll be interesting to see what 88 Films does with that film, since it's being released next year.

Got Toxic Avenger II from Amazon yesterday. Definitely the unrated cut. No indication on the box either, so that was a pleasant surprise.

According to Amazon Toxie 3 comes out May 12

The HD master for Toxic Avenger II is the Unrated cut, but the HD master for III is the edited cut. Kaufman posted on Troma's Facebook page stating the "extra gore and violence" in III was never meant to be in the film after fans were livid with 88 Films' release of it in the UK.

Maybe I'll run by Zia later today to see if they have any copies of II in stock.

re: Troma on Blu-ray

Did anyone do a comparison between the US and UK BDs for Toxic Avenger 1? The hearsay seems to be the UK disc is better, but that's just based on the fact that 88 Films did clean up, but just because they did clean up doesn't automatically make it the better release.

Can we get the title of this thread changed? Seems a little silly six years later.

To be fair, Troma has only released like six Blu-rays and they've all been of various quality from "okay" to "shit."

So they're still diving into Blu-ray...

Hey! Maybe with Arrow Films now distributing content in the US, they could just give up and let an actual distributor handle their library!

Done.

I've been trying to update outdated thread titles as I see them. If I miss something that's been bumped to the first page, use 'Report this Post...' and I'll take care of it.

Re: Troma on Blu-ray

Word on the street is that Troma's release of The Toxic Avenger Part II is 480i.

I can't even.

Seriously Troma, just give the films to anyone else. Anyone. Mill Creek isn't doing anything since they lost the Miramax catalog.

I believe something encoded at 480i is called a DVD, not a Blu-ray. Just wow.

Re: Troma on Blu-ray

From Troma's FB page:

Thank you to the fans who brought our attention Toxic Avenger II Blu-ray issues. It’s been confirmed that the Blu-ray discs are defective and not in true 1080HD. We’ve instructed our distributor to issue a recall of all outstanding discs. We’ve corrected the problem and have told our distributor to replicate and distribute a new batch of corrected discs ASAP. If you purchased a copy of the film through www.tromashop.com, please email customer service for a replacement disc. If you’ve purchased from Amazon or another retailer, please make your return and replacement through them.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please know we value your support tremendously and unlike the hated multinational conglomerates General Motors, Ford, and Chrystler, we will never take you for a ride. And unlike the tradition of these hated companies, please accept our love.

Sincerely,
The Troma Team

That makes no sense, since Toxic III was released in R and Unrated versions on VHS and DVD. Then again, he tried to claim the director of Rabid Grannies preferred the version without all the gore and violence in years past! Which also makes no logical sense, since they wouldn't bother making a gory movie if that was never intended.

Re: Troma on Blu-ray

Finally got Toxie III from Amazon. And.....

The DVD (from the previous releases) is directors cut, but the Blu-Ray is not. The opening video store scene is heavily edited.

Fucking sigh.
