Re: UHD release announcements

Link doesn't work for me and a search on Amazon doesn't pull it up...what was the Amazon price on this? That seems like an odd selection of movies. Swap out Jerry Maguire and A League of Their Own for, say On the Waterfront and Bridge on the River Kwai, and then we'd be talking. Not that I don't like Jerry and League, but come on...they really don't fit in.

I like Jerry Maguire and A League of their Own but I wouldn't call them Classics.

Amazon pulled it. They didn’t list a price — just said “Currently Unavailable”.

Re: UHD release announcements

If those are regular UHD cases in slipcovers I’ll definitely grab this but I have no interest in a giant box.

Re: UHD release announcements

Especially when the price of Sony titles drop like a brick within a few months after release. I can’t see this box thing drop too fast in price.

Re: UHD release announcements

While I'm interested in owning most of those titles (some of which I never even got on DVD or Blu-ray), I'm super not interested in such a large ugly box to house them.

I agree, although it looks like there are individual cases or digipaks within the box.

According to the Bits, those 2 were included as a result of that Sony poll we took last year.

Also, this box set is limited to 8000 copies. And we should see more volumes of Classics coming later this year. Hopefully, once they've sold through some of these box sets, they'll release the titles individually later.

That set did have a price - and it came out to about $175 with sales tax, so that's a big fucking no from me.

After they relisted it, yeah. The initial one that they pulled didn’t. It’s never worth sweating the first price on Amazon. They’ll lower it before too much longer. It’s already down to $112.99 at Target, for instance.

The Columbia Classics set is 112.99 at Target, and is part of their B2G1. Of course, the problem would be finding something to get with it.

Details for the Columbia box set. A bonus disc exclusive to the set and both Ghandi and Lawrence of Arabia will be split across two UHD discs.
https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/m...ts/040720-1800
And while we’re at it, Sony has sent the specific details on what the set will include. The box will feature an 80-page book of in-depth essays about each film written by historian Julie Kurgo. You’ll also get an exclusive bonus disc “featuring excerpts from Columbia Pictures’ televised 50th anniversary special, which originally aired in 1975 and has never been officially available. Re: UHD release announcements

So Amazon lists it as a 17 disc set. The digital bits breakdown is:
  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - 1 UHD, 1 Blu-ray
  • Lawrence of Arabia- 2 UHD (feature), 2 Blu-ray (1 feature, 1 bonus features)
  • Dr. Strangelove- 1 UHD, 1 Blu-ray
  • Gandhi- 2 UHD, 2 Blu-ray (1 feature, 1 bonus features)
  • A League of Their Own- 1 UHD, 1 Blu-ray
  • Jerry Maguire- 1 UHD, 1 Blu-ray
  • Bonus disc (Blu-ray)
The way they're listed, it looks like Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi will have 4 discs each, "two 4K UHDs," "Blu-ray sourced from the 4K master," and "Special Features Blu-ray." The other films don't mention a "Special Features Blu-ray," they just list the special features, apparently based on whether they're going to be on the UHD or Blu-ray.

To that end, the special features breakdown looks to be:
  • Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
    • 4K with HDR10 and 1.0 DTS-HD Master Audio
    • Blu-ray sourced from the 4K master with 1.0 DTS-HD Master Audio
      • audio commentary with Frank Capra Jr.,

Well they'll be able to split the Lawrence discs at the intermission mark the way it was in the theaters.

Both films had intermissions in their theatrical releases, so if the intermissions are part of the restorations, I'm fine with the split.

I only want Dr. Strangelove so hopefully it gets a standalone release soon after. I also don't want Taxi Driver to end up being held hostage in a later set either.

Gandhi sucks. I never want to see that movie again. I like the others but I already have Dr Strangelove twice on Blu Ray. How many times do I need to buy that movie?
