I think this is less a case of limitations and more a case of "we didn't give a shit".

They did add the bulk of the Special Features just odd to drop the minor things. I can't imagine the storyboards are very long. Atleast Monster Squad is being treated with respect (along with My Bloody Valentine).

Re: Near Dark: 11/10/09

Storyboards, still galleries, and text production notes often don't make the transition to Blu-ray if the studio only has low-res files for them that were barely adequate for use on DVD. On Blu-ray, either the studio has to upscale them, which often looks like crap (and can make the text unreadable), or present them unscaled in a tiny window in the center of the HD pixel grid. Neither is really an adequate solution, so many studios just drop them.

Thanks, that makes sense. Would it be cost-prohibitive for the studio to generate or obtain hi-res files, or is it basically use the low-res or nothing?

Makes sense. Shame the storyboards for dropped though (don't care about still gallerys).

It's probably less the expense than the time and effort to rescan all the items, which they don't feel is warranted. It's not like a disc with storyboards will sell one additional copy more than a disc without storyboards.

Well that sucks. I was looking forward to watching this in hi-def, but now I think I'll stick with my SD DVD.

Good to see this isn't barebones as once thought though. I'll definitely pick it up for $10.

Re: Near Dark: 11/10/09

The Beaver review is fairly close to my impressions of the picture quality. Near Dark is only the most middling of upgrades over the dvd in terms of video quality. It is clear the transfer looks ancient, likely from an outdated HD transfer made for a past dvd release. But then again this movie was a fairly low-budget affair, so limitations in the principal photography could very well have been revealed for the first time by this release.

I'll prob grab this for $10, but that review sounds less than promising. VERY disappointing.

I had ordered it, but that review is enough to get me to cancel.

I doubt it is either, at least not projected anyways... gotta be an improvement over the SD. I was at Walmart today, and grabbed it, at only $10, I'm more than willing to 'take a chance'.

My friend got this from Wal-Mart. He says the PQ is on par with the DVD. Major pass - which is good because I don't have to keep anything even remotely looking like Twilight on my BD shelf.

Hardly DVD-like Picture. Some scenes were soft, but overall its a decent upgrade.

Like total shit

Seriously, $10 is worth it for this Blu-ray. The movie itself was pretty meh, but if you're a fan, I'd get it. Cujo on the other hand...what a pile of shit all around that was.

Re: Near Dark: 11/10/09

I'm a big fan of the movie, so if you're saying it beats the DVD I'll gladly drop $10.

What's wrong with Cujo? Does the BD look bad?

Yeah, $10 would be worth it for Near Dark.

Cujo suffers from numerous issues - whites/yellows (bright colors) have a horrible halo affect, some scenes seem VHSish and the film hardly looks like a Blu-ray. Sound is bad, the film is bad....ugh. What a total POS.

Re: Near Dark: 11/10/09

That's a real bummer about Cujo. De Bont's cinematography was one of the film's highlights, IMO, so I was hoping it would look stellar in HD. I'll prob still pick it up, though. I'm sure it'll be $10 as well.

I gave it a generous 2 out of 5 for Picture Quality (given the age). I watched Cujo, MBV, Near Dark and Monster Squad and it was by far the worst (in both picture and audio). The tennis scene really showcases the halo affects on white. It was like smearing vasaline all over my screen
