I'd buy a Criterion Manos release. It's at least as valid as Salo.

I wonder where Tarantino got that 35mm print of Manos? Apparently, it's very rare, and one of his favorite "comedies."

Well, restored Manos IS coming soon: http://www.manosinhd.com/ just not from Criterion.

Dumb and Dumber was one of the funniest movies made and a classic in many people's eyes. Should that be included?
No, but Kingpin should.

I still want to see Salo. I almost bought at the last B&N sale. I pussied out though.

I saw it and In the Realm of the Senses at my local B&N. I was pretty surprised to see them at a mainstream video store. Salo had a sticker. They had Faces of Death too.

B&N carries books that are far more fucked up than In the Realm of the Senses and Salo.

I netflixed it instead of blind buying it awhile back and was glad I did. I like controversial movies but found Salo just to be gross for gross' sake...kinda like the human centipede movies. While interesting, it wasn't something I had any interest in revisiting anytime soon.

I know others will disagree with me and say it is a work of art, but whatever. People smear shit on walls and call it art so to each his own.

I thought it was good when I first saw it. Need to see it again soon for a re-evaluation, but like you said to each their own.

I'd agree with this. I saw it about 10 years ago when the Criterion DVD was pulled and it (at the time) was the most valuable DVD out there.

I wasn't overly impressed and felt no need to ever watch it again. It felt more like shock value than anything of substance, although from what it sounds like the original source material was along the same lines.

True. I remember back in my school days when they had filters on the Internet, but seemed blissfully unaware of what was in the lurid Judith Krantz novels in the library . Guess it's the sometimes too-accurate "nobody reads anymore" mindset, or maybe figuring that people aren't going to know as much because the selection is much broader. Who knows ?

A local library used to carry Piers Anthony's novels in the children's/young readers section. I have to believe the librarian was a very twisted person hoping to corrupt young minds or had never actually read any of his work.

Salo always seemed like the kind of movie John Waters would make if he wanted to make a serious art house film.

I'm so glad Criterion didn't mess with that Eraserhead cover art. It's iconic to me.

Spoiler:
Looks like the corners are a bit damaged, he's off to bluraydotcom to write a strongly worded post about the quality of shipping.

I can't tell if you missed the sarcasm, or are responding to his sarcasm with sarcasm.
