1.85:1 widescreen bd movies showing up as fs on tv??

Hey Guys,

I have a 55-inch Sony HDTV and I popped in both GET SMART and RISKY BUSINESS, back to back and despite the packaging saying WIDESCREEN 1.85:1, and playing w/ every possible setting I could on every remote I could get my hands on, I couldn't get anything to change! Does anyone know what the problem here is? Is it b/c of the size of the TV? Then I popped in W. and it was in WS, no problems. I'm all confused, somebody help! Thanks guys...

Well, just FYI, this is a BD question so it belongs in the BD forum. It will probably get moved by a moderator.

On a WS TV a 1.85:1 will have basically invisible bars. It should basically fill the entire TV. So do you mean there were bars on the left and right sides?

Unless your TV provides an "Overscan" setting, you (typically) won't see any bars. While your WS TV has an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 -- which is *not* as wide as 1.85:1 -- most TV's are set up at the factory for about a 2-3% overscan, which is enough to slightly zoom in on the 1.85:1 transfer -- rendering "black bars" invisible.

In addition to overscan on the TV being a factor, a lot of studios slightly open up their 1.85:1 movies to fill a 1.78:1 HDTV screen.

Yes, and it just so happens that those two titles are from Warner, which is one of those studios.

Try a 1.85:1 Fox or Universal title if you want to find out if you can see the small bars.

Despite a lot of video reviewers sweating out about 1.85:1 films being shown as 1.78:1... All that's done is a tiny bit of opening up of the image. It's completely inconsequential.

What really sucks is when 1.66:1 is cropped to 1.78:1.

Are there any examples of this out there?

I don't think many 1.66:1 films have been put on BluRay, cropped or not. The Truman Show was apparently 1.66:1, then stretched to 1.78:1. A Clockwork Orange and Chungking Express are proper 1.66:1.
